Transactional Support: Lead legal workstreams for capital markets transactions, including:
prime brokerage, margin lending, repo/securities lending, and derivatives.
fund investments (limited partnership interests), co-investments, and secondary transactions.
private placements and strategic investments in public markets.
Documentation & Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate complex agreements with counterparties and external counsel.
Regulatory Advisory: Monitor and interpret securities law and regulatory developments impacting AIMCo’s investment strategies.
Risk Management: Identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across trading and investment activities.
Collaboration: Partner with Public Markets teams, Compliance, and Operations to ensure seamless execution and governance.
External Counsel Oversight: Manage relationships and budgets for external legal providers.
Proven commitment to developing subject matter expertise and a track record of leading deals.
Over 7 years of experience in corporate/securities law, with exposure to capital markets transactions, trading documentation, private funds, and alternative investment structures.
Experience in an enterprise in-house role, particularly at another institutional investor or investment manager in a regulated industry, is an asset.
Law degree (J.D., LL.B., or equivalent) from an accredited law school.
Call to the Alberta Bar and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
Intellectual curiosity and sound legal and commercial judgment.
Excellent written and oral communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for the intended audience.
Strong interpersonal relationship-building skills, resilience, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
Highly motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines and across time zones.
Strong negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills.
Proven ability to manage complex projects and provide commercially pragmatic advice.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
