Senior Engine Programmer

We are looking for a Senior Engine Programmer for our next big game!

The Job

As a Senior Engine Programmer, you will help shape engine development at Housemarque alongside our Technical Director and a highly skilled team. You will maintain a holistic view of our in-house engine systems, support the needs of gameplay and design teams, and contribute to the architecture that powers our most ambitious features. Your work will include designing, implementing, and reviewing engine code, collaborating closely with cross-disciplinary teams, and contributing to both current and future engine initiatives. You may lead specific systems and adapt your focus as development priorities evolve.

What will your day-to-day look like?

A typical day begins as you arrive at our downtown Helsinki studio. Maybe you start with a workout in the in-house gym and grab a healthy breakfast before settling in with a good coffee. After catching up with teammates, you check messages from a co-development partner, review any urgent Slack requests, and continue work on a major engine update that’s been a focus for several sprints.
You might sync with graphics programmers to tackle code in their domain, or send a code review request to a colleague after finalizing work on another subsystem. Later, you join the team’s daily sync before heading out to lunch; one of many great options within walking distance.
In the afternoon, you could jump on a call with a co-dev studio to strategize on solving a challenging technical problem that would unlock a much-desired gameplay feature. You wrap up the day by updating internal documentation for an engine feature you helped identify and design; one that other programmers will extend in future iterations. You may even be considering how to present this work internally or at a future conference.

What qualities will contribute to your success in this role?

Each of the following attributes will help you secure this position:

• 5+ years of experience in professional game development
• Deep technical knowledge of Unreal Engine or other major game engines
• Experience in multithreading
• Strong communication skills in spoken and written English
• Ability to collaborate effectively and help others contribute to shared goals
• Ability to build understandable, stable, and elegant systems in C++
• Motivation to find solutions that balance time, effort, and quality
• Tenacity in locating and fixing bugs in complex code
• An open, forward-looking mindset
