PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The accompanist provides collaborative keyboard accompaniment services for the Scripps College Music Department, including for the vocal and string studio instruction, including at regular performances, and special College events, on piano, electric keyboard, and harpsichord.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Accompany private voice and instrumental lessons and rehearsals in the department, as well as weekly studio performance class(es) (currently scheduled Tuesday 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Thursday 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m., and Friday 9:30 am to 5pm, but subject to change based on department needs).
Create part-learning recordings and ‘minus-one’ accompaniment tracks for student use.
Accompany junior and senior vocal/instrumental recitals and their rehearsals as needed.
Accompany students on regular student recitals (approximately 6 per semester, on select Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.)
Accompany faculty voice recitals and instrumentalist recitals (for example, “Friday at Noon” series) as arranged.
Serve as pianist for select college functions as arranged.
Accompany instrumental and vocal student auditions and juries as required.
Actively support the College’s Principles of Community and Institutional Values in the performance of job duties.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Skilled and highly competent as a keyboard accompanist on piano, harpsichord and electronic keyboard.
Ability to accompany a soloist, and to support soloist lines in rehearsal.
Ability to understand meaning of musical terms, signs, and abbreviations, in popular, American Musical Theatre, semi-classical and classical music.
Ability to follow a soloist in performing musical score.
Ability to play at sight with accuracy and to accompany in performance with artistry.
Ability to work effectively with instructional faculty and students.
Ability to use appropriate technology as required to make sound recordings.
Excellent communication skills.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Music, piano/keyboard performance, collaborative piano or related field, or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.
Demonstrated proficiency in piano, preferably as an accompanist is preferred.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS
This is a regular status, part-time (20 hours per week), benefits-eligible and non-exempt position.
The spring 2026 semester schedule is Tuesday 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Thursday 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m., and Friday 9:30 am to 5 pm. Semester schedules are usually determined in advance, and management aims to keep those schedules consistent for the semester.
For future semesters, schedules may change based upon the needs of the department, including but limited to, class schedules, recitals, etc.
Hourly rate range: $30.00-$34.50. The salary rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
May supervise student employees.
