Utility Mechanic II - HVAC

Under general supervision this position supports licensed HVAC technicians in installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This entry-level role is designed for individuals beginning their career in the HVAC trade and provides hands-on training while emphasizing safety, technical skill development, and professional growth

Position Specific Accountabilities

1.    Support technicians with the operation, installation, basic troubleshooting, and repair of residential and commercial HVAC systems, including air handlers, rooftop units, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, VAVs, and exhaust systems.
2.    Assist with preventative maintenance, system inspections, and Building Automation Systems (BAS) to help ensure safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient campus facilities 
3.    Learn BAS fundamentals, including sensors, controllers, actuators, and control sequences
4.    Help diagnose basic mechanical and electrical issues under supervision.
5.    Maintain accurate maintenance logs and work order documentation
6.    Carry tools, materials, and equipment to job sites and ensure work areas remain clean and organized
7.    Learn to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals
8.    Support basic tasks such as ductwork assembly, filter changes, belt replacements, lubrication, equipment cleaning, and system testing
9.    Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe handling of refrigerants and electrical components
10.    Help load and unload materials, inventory parts, and maintain company vehicles
11.    Communicate professionally with customers and team members
12.    Participate in ongoing training, coursework, and on-the-job learning to advance technical skills
13.     Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications 

  • Typically a High School diploma, trade school certificate or equivalent experiences. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of HVAC support skills. May include enrolling in HVAC training programs.

  • Entry-level position with prior hands-on mechanical experience preferred (e.g., automotive, construction, facilities maintenance, or related trades).Basic working knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment repair and use of a multimeter.

  • Strong interest in HVAC, mechanical systems or other skilled trades.

  • Ability to perform general maintenance and repair work and properly and safely use of equipment and tools. Ability to work on ladders, roofs, and mechanical rooms

  • Ability to read instructions and follow written and/or verbal instructions; effectively work as part of a team. Interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills; effective and timely problem solving skills. 

  • OSHA 10 certification or similar safety training a plus.

  • Requires valid California driver's license. Must maintain a “satisfactory” driving record as evidenced by DMV.

Salary range

$25.87 - $32.31 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
