Our Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a System Support Engineer to join our Services Job Family working on Connect. This role will report into the Network Support Manager – Danny Hutton.

The role holder will be responsible for the technical implementation and support of new services, modification and support of existing telecommunications assets, contributing to the cost effective delivery and support of quality service in the face of changing needs within the LUL Connect and other transmission networks managed and supplied by Hitachi Rail.

This role is located in our Palestra office, with time also spent at Waterloo and out on-site. You will be required to be full time on-site, working a varying shift pattern that will include days and nights, including providing on-call support when required.

Key Responsibilities:

As System Support Engineer, you will be the 2nd/3rd line support for all Connect installed equipment. As well as this, your day-to-day responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Carryout systems analysis activities to support service delivery and service support
  • Have a strong understanding of IP, SDH, PDH, MPLS/TP (MSN), ATM and RF technologies to support the business and customers
  • Have an understanding of operating system and application software, Microsoft systems, SQL and Unix would be an advantage
  • Write and update Service Centre Technical documents and Change Control documentation
  • Manage network capacity to support existing and future business needs
  • Control receipt, identification, storage, and withdrawal of all supported configured items
  • Provide support for change management process, for changes to existing network
  • Record all requests for change and validate possibilities for configured items and network development
  • Work with the Service Desk providing updates of changes or future changes to support customer by way of notification
  • Work with third party supplier when required to prevent network interruption and future failures
  • Support and develop ACMS by providing accurate details of configured items
  • Carry out Problem and Release management tasks to maintain minimum risk to existing and future services
  • Support the O&M review and acceptance of designs for projects and bids
  • Take part in Design Reviews, with particular attention to the impact of designs and works upon O&M services
  • Undertake equipment/system testing as required and within the limits of your agreed competency
  • Deputise for the Network Support Manager when required
  • Co-ordinating / supervising work groups during planned work and faulting activities.

  • Understand the importance of configuration control and be capable of developing processes and managing equipment configuration for compliance with them
