Job Description:

Overview

The IT Intern will support the IT department with day‑to‑day technical operations, hardware preparation, inventory management, and basic end‑user support. This role is ideal for someone interested in building hands-on IT skills in a professional environment while learning how an IT department functions.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with imaging, deploying, and setting up new workstations.

  • Perform basic hardware troubleshooting (peripherals, connectivity, startup issues).

  • Organize and maintain IT storage areas, including labeling and cable management.

  • Help track and update asset inventory via Excel (laptops, monitors, accessories).

  • Support onboarding activities such as preparing equipment for new hires.

  • Assist in maintaining documentation, guides, and inventory records.

  • Shadow IT staff on system administration, projects, and daily tasks.

  • Participate in special IT projects as needed (network closet cleanup, device lifecycle tasks).

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience equivalent to a junior or senior in high school or attending college or vocational school.

Interest in computer hardware, networking, or IT support.

Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
Basic understanding of Windows/Mac systems.
Ability to follow procedures and work independently with guidance.
Good communication and customer service skills.

Responsibility

Responsible to the assigned Department Head, but may operate under the direction of any number of others in the department charged by the Department Head with the responsibility of assisting in training/educational activities. The Director, Human Resources is responsible to be knowledgeable about the requirements of the internship program that the department is involved in order to make sure that the City appropriately comply. Interns that are not paid by the department to which the intern is assigned will have an overall responsibility to the Director, Human Resources or designee. No Supervision Exercised.

Physical Requirements

Hands-on work with devices and equipment.
Interaction with staff across the IT department.
Supervised exposure to enterprise IT systems and tools.

Incumbent is required to have sufficient hearing to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity to operate standard office, date entry, and word processing equipment is required.

Public Contact

From limited to extensive contact with the public, depending on the assignment and/or the particular duties/orientation assigned at any given time.
