Summary of Job Duties:

The TRIO Upward Bound Program is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and engaging English Instructor to support high school students in strengthening their academic skills and college readiness during our Summer Residential Program. The ideal candidate will create a vibrant learning environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and effective communication while preparing students for postsecondary success.

Key Responsibilities
Design and deliver engaging English curriculum aligned with high school standards and college readiness benchmarks
Incorporate innovative teaching strategies such as project-based learning, digital storytelling, and interactive discussions
Facilitate lessons in grammar, writing, literature, reading comprehension, and public speaking
Integrate real-world applications and culturally relevant materials to enhance student engagement
Provide individualized academic support and constructive feedback to students
Assess student progress through creative assignments, presentations, and written work
Collaborate with program staff to support student development and program goals
Participate in program activities, including workshops, college tours, and enrichment sessions
Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and progress reports

Innovative & Engaging Teaching Expectations
Utilize technology integration (e.g., multimedia presentations, collaborative platforms, AI-supported writing tools responsibly)
Encourage student voice and choice through creative writing, spoken word, debates, and storytelling
Implement hands-on and experiential learning activities, such as mock interviews, peer editing workshops, and real-life communication scenarios
Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that motivates diverse learners
Connect lessons to college and career readiness skills, including professional communication and academic writing


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Education or related field with 2 years of classroom teaching or related experience/training
  • Current Teacher Certification, Former/Retired k-12 Teacher, Higher Education Instructor or Trainer.
  • Passion for working with first-generation students.
