Job Summary
The Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) is an innovative model for the advancement of community-based approaches to experiential learning that has been highly successful in establishing Community Service Learning (CSL) as a key pedagogy and strategic priority for UBC. Community engaged learning (CEL) including CSL, community-based research, and international service learning, enhances students' academic learning and their capacity for global citizenship, while strengthening civil society and advancing sustainability. Community engaged learning is one of the enriched educational experiences that is highlighted in UBC's strategic plan. Its strong connections with diverse community partners mean that the Centre is also an important embodiment of UBC's commitment to community engagement.
As the home for one of UBCs key enriched educational experiences, CCEL works strategically to further expand the number and diversity of community engaged learning opportunities available to students. CCEL works closely with faculty and staff across campus to integrate community engaged learning into academic courses and to ensure a range of meaningful co-curricular community engaged learning opportunities are also available. At the same time, the Centre works with diverse organizations in the community, including non-profit and for-profit organizations and public schools, to engage students in short-term community-based projects and ongoing weekly placements that contribute to the achievement of community goals. CCEL is considered a Canadian leader in the fields of university-community engagement and service learning.
The Student Engagement Coordinator role coordinates opt-in, low barrier, and scalable community engaged learning (CEL) initiatives. In addition, they are responsible for the development and delivery of orientations, workshops, resources, and tools intended to support students seeking to engage in a community based experiential learning opportunity. The role is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with community partners seeking to identify, create, and refine co-curricular CEL opportunities for students. The incumbent also assists in the coordination of student recruitment activities and registration.
Organizational Status
The Student Engagement Coordinator is a member of CCEL, a unit in the Student Affairs portfolio within the Office of the VP Students. Reporting to the Engagement Advisor the incumbent will interact closely with community partner organizations, students, and other CCEL and VP Students staff, and staff from UBC departments across campus. The Coordinator will work under the direction of the Engagement Advisor and with staff across the Centre
Work Performed
Program Development, Coordination & Administration
Develop and coordinate co-curricular community-engaged learning opportunities, with an emphasis on opt-in, low-barrier, and scalable programming.
Coordinate all administrative and program planning aspects of CCEL’s cyclical co-curricular programs.
Establish and maintain effective administrative systems, including communications, reporting, and participation tracking.
Ensure website and online content related to opt-in and low-barrier programs is current, accurate, and engaging.
Monitor program budgets, ensure accurate financial reporting, and contribute to risk mitigation strategies.
Contribute to the development and revision of logic models, program plans, and evaluation materials.
Prepare program updates, reports, and post-program summaries, and recommend improvements to programs and systems.
Supervise co-curricular support staff, such as student staff and program assistants.
Other duties as required.
Community Partnerships
Identify, create, and refine community-based projects and placements that align student learning with community-identified priorities.
Build and maintain sustained relationships with community organizations and schools, and develop new partnerships aligned with CCEL goals.
Recruit, onboard, and support community partners, including non-profit organizations and elementary schools, to co-create meaningful CEL opportunities.
Support the capacity of partner organizations to host and mentor UBC students and deepen their understanding of community-engaged learning principles.
Advise on-campus and community-based partners on shaping projects and placements to support meaningful student engagement.
Serve as a primary point of contact for partners throughout program planning, delivery, and implementation

Student Advising, Preparation & Outreach
Recruit and train student leadership cohorts, to co-create and deliver complementary, opt-in and low barrier programming.
Recruit, screen, and match student participants to projects and events aligned with their interests and learning goals.
Advise students individually and in groups on opportunities for community-engaged learning and the value of CEL experiences.
Develop and deliver student orientations, preparation workshops, training, and resources.
Facilitate workshops for classes, student clubs, leadership cohorts, and campus or community partners.
Support students interested in initiating their own community-engaged projects, including identifying potential organizational partners.
Serve as a staff liaison for student organizations working with community partners.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including: UBC senior administrators, staff, students, alumni, faculty, staff within community organizations, individual community members, and others in external educational institutions and professional associations. UBC's community engagement activities have a high profile in the community and engage program participants in situations that may be new. Must be attentive to risk management in all situations; must be aware of the need to minimize risk to participants and maximize the perceived and actual sensitivity of programs/initiatives and the university to community issues. As the department is handling confidential information, must understand and respect the principles of confidentiality. Errors in judgment or the disclosure of confidential information could have very public consequences, affecting the reputation of CCEL and/or resulting in embarrassment to the University of British Columbia and its senior administration.
Supervision Received
Reports to CCEL’s Engagement Advisor. Works under general direction and with considerable autonomy.

As required, responsible for supervision of program staff and part-time student assistants, and for providing support to program participants; coordinates, reviews, and evaluates work performance of supervised employees. Participates in hiring and/or selection of program staff, student assistants and volunteers as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience demonstrating the ability to plan and coordinate is preferred.
Experience and skills in setting goals and priorities to meet existing strategic directions.
Experience working with university faculty, staff, and students is an asset.
Experience working with staff from the non-profit sector and/or public schools is an asset.
Experience facilitating groups and leading information, orientation, and training sessions.
Experience in event or program organizing and promotion is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.
