What’s the role?  

To strengthen the ZEISS team located in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Dublin, California, we are seeking a Product Quality and Reliability Engineer to focus on improving the reliability and quality of our X-Ray Source (ZXR-1) products.

This role is critical in ensuring the reliability of the X-Ray Source, both in production and in the field, by analyzing data, identifying trends, and implementing improvements. The ideal candidate will be a driven self-starter with strong analytical skills, hands-on troubleshooting expertise, and the ability to build statistical models to correlate manufacturing processes with field performance.

This position will require occasional travel, including international travel, to collaborate with our extended manufacturing network and potentially analyze issues at other facilities.

Here’s what you’ll do:

Reliability and Quality Analysis

  • Conduct thorough assessments of the X-Ray Source's reliability to identify areas for improvement.
  • Build and maintain statistical models (e.g., Weibull analysis) to evaluate system-level reliability and performance trends.
  • Develop closed-loop statistical models to correlate design, manufacturing, and field performance for improved product quality and reliability.

Data-Driven Improvements

  • Analyze production and field data to identify trends, failure modes, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Design and execute optimized experiments (DOE) to test hypotheses and validate reliability improvements.
  • Implement strategies to enhance the X-Ray Source's performance, reduce failures, and extend operational lifetime.

Hands-On Troubleshooting

  • Work directly with mechanical, electromechanical, and electrical systems to diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address reliability concerns and implement corrective actions.

Collaboration and Influence

  • Partner with engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, and field service teams to drive quality and reliability improvements.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing training and guidance to internal stakeholders.
  • Influence diverse teams to adopt best practices and improve product quality.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain detailed documentation, including failure analysis reports, test results, and reliability improvement plans.
  • Ensure compliance with quality management systems (QMS) and relevant standards such as ISO 9001.

Industry Knowledge and Best Practices

  • Stay updated on industry trends, advancements, and best practices related to X-Ray Source technology and reliability engineering.
  • Extend reliability engineering principles to the system level, providing general product support beyond the X-Ray Source.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Required:
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
    • Proven experience in reliability engineering, preferably in high-energy physics applications, RF engineering, X-Ray Source technology, or related fields.
    • Proficiency in root cause analysis, FMEA, statistical analysis, and reliability prediction methodologies.
    • Hands-on experience troubleshooting mechanical, electromechanical, and electrical systems.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects while adhering to deadlines.
  • Desired:
    • Master’s degree or higher, or 10+ years of industry experience.
    • Familiarity with reliability software packages and statistical tools.
    • Proficiency in parametric and non-parametric reliability analysis involving large datasets.
    • Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) analysis and implementation.
    • Capable of reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical Demands:
    • Occasionally required to stand, sit for long periods, use hands to handle or feel objects, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • Must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.
    • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment:
    • Exposure to production and test areas with varying noise levels and environmental conditions.
    • Steel-toe shoes are required in designated areas.

Travel Requirements

  • Occasional domestic and international travel to collaborate with extended manufacturing networks and analyze issues at other facilities

The annual pay range for this position is $166,000 – $207,000

The pay offered for this role may be influenced by factors such as job location, scope of role, qualifications, education, experience, & complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent.

This position is also eligible for a performance bonus or sales commissions.  ZEISS also offers robust benefits, including medical plans, retirement savings plan and paid time off.
