Job Description
We are looking for a driven and talented Staff Instructional Designer to join our Global Operations Team. This role supports Illumina’s learning strategy by contributing adult-learning and design expertise to create best-in-class training approaches, balancing the art of instructional and UX design with the science of strategy to deliver innovative and effective student-centered learning experiences. The successful Staff Instructional Designer will pull together the bigger picture for leadership and other stakeholders and develop learning experiences that support critical business needs and strategic imperatives.
This role involves opportunities to innovate, create, and implement alternative training and delivery methods, e.g., instructor-led, web-based, synchronous/asynchronous distance learning, self-paced and blended learning models for a diverse and global audience. Through regular interactions with team members, business process owners, trainers, and various levels of management across departments, the person filling this role will collaborate with internal customers to design and develop appropriate solutions that fulfill training needs and exceed customer expectations.
The individual in this role will be engaged in executing independent development tasks, leading training development projects, participating on collaborative team / cross-functional efforts, and providing guidance and direction for other team members.
Responsibilities:
- Support the planning, development, and implementation of Global Operations learning programs and ensure learning programs meet organization performance objectives.
- Interpret learning challenges and recommend best practices in online course design through the production of engaging and accessible learning experiences that are developed with consideration to diversity, equity, and inclusion of all instructors and learners.
- Support the development and sustainment of the training management program by establishing development processes/workflows, defining and implementing best practices, and monitoring project portfolio and business impact metrics to identify and drive program improvement opportunities.
- Accountable for tracking training compliance metrics of the India Site.
- Participates in the definition of area goals and drives teams to deliver on goals
- Provides oversight of training work and status updates on assigned responsibilities and goals, and escalates issues in a timely fashion
- Network with senior personnel in other internal training organizations to facilitate global training program and process alignment.
- Support partnerships with all Global Operations sites and functional areas to enable sharing of best practices and align training strategies and goals.
- Host discussions / presentations with peers, management, and relevant cross-functional stakeholders to review tasks, provide project updates, and influence decisions at critical team interfaces.
- Apply best practice in instructional design, adult learning theory, facilitation, and relevant training methodologies to ensure value-added learning & development.
- Identify and execute on opportunities to improve the learning experience and enhance training quality and effectiveness for employees.
- Conducts needs analysis to determine and validate training needs.
- Develop, design, and implement effective training plans and engaging learning experiences to support large-scale and cross-functional training programs.
- Coordinate with vendors and SMEs to complete outsourced training projects.
- Research, create, and implement alternative training and delivery methods and incorporate new technologies to enhance learner engagement and training effectiveness.
- Transform complex technical concepts, procedures, and processes into relatable learning experiences.
- Develop instructional materials using industry-standard tools including Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Creative Suite and Vyond.
- Strategically apply Kirkpatrick methodology to measure the training effectiveness and ROI for projects.
- Manage multiple projects with different timelines and levels of complexity.

Requirements:
- At least 8 years of experience in training and development instructional design initiatives.

- Experience with Learning Management System(s).
- Advanced experience with Articulate Storyline
- Experience with the creation of voice-over scripts, audio recording and editing.
- Video recording and video editing experience with industry standard tools.
- Advanced skills in PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to contribute as both - a strong individual player and a strong technical mentor for peers in the team for instructional design process and best practices.

Required Educational Background:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a training/education related field or equivalent related work experience and technical background.
Preferred Experiential Background
- Formal project management training/experience
- Experience working in the medical device or other regulated industry

Experience/Education:
