PRIMARY FUNCTION:

At Target in India, the Tax function is a critical enabler of compliant, efficient and strategic business operations.  This role will lead end-to-end India tax across Direct Tax, Indirect Tax (GST), Transfer Pricing, and International Tax, with accountability for compliance, planning, controversy management, and governance.

The role will partner closely with Finance, business and global tax teams to drive tax efficiency, manage risk, and support key business decisions.

This role will focus on the below areas –

  • Lead end-to-end India tax across Direct Tax, GST, Transfer Pricing, and International Tax, including compliance, provisioning, tax computations, return filings, and timely payment of all statutory dues.
  • Manage tax audits (Form 3CD/26), assessments, and litigation strategy across direct and indirect Tax, including closure of audits, handling DRP/ITAT matters, managing GST audits and departmental inquiries, driving resolution of legacy litigations, and overseeing GST refund matters (including STPI and SEZ units) in partnership with external advisors.
  • Lead development and execution of transfer pricing strategy, ensuring alignment with global policies, including preparation/review of TP documentation (Form 3CEB, Master File, etc.).
  • Lead Bilateral Advance Pricing Agreement (APA) programs end-to-end, including coordination with US and India teams, external advisors, and tax authorities, while proactively driving data readiness, submissions, and responses to enable timely closure and sustained compliance.
  • Ensure end-to-end GST compliance, including return reviews, reconciliations, ITC optimization, vendor compliance monitoring, refunds, and management of GST audits and departmental inquiries.
  • Provide strategic tax advisory on intercompany transactions, cost allocations, pricing models, and business/vendor contracts, while proactively identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Partner closely with US/global tax teams, internal stakeholders, and external consultants to ensure aligned tax positions, high-quality delivery, and cost-efficient outcomes.
  • Provide timely and clear updates to leadership on tax exposures, risks, and planning opportunities.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing Tax team through hiring, mentoring, performance management, and cross-training across tax domains.
  • Drive process improvements, capability building, and problem-solving initiatives to enhance efficiency, governance, and scalability of the tax function

Working within Tax, your mission will be to drive value-added work and support our core retail business goals.  Our tax team focuses on all aspects of tax reporting including enhancing productivity and efficiency of core compliance through process and technology, monitoring tax risk and opportunities across all tax disciplines, engaging and educating Finance and the broader organization regarding tax considerations, and prioritizing team resources to support key work streams.

Requirements

  • Chartered Accountant with 10+ years of post qualification experience in India taxation with an accounting firm or equivalent experience in a large corporate tax department.
  • Proven ability to effectively develop, manage and inspire team members and work together as a team
  • Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently with limited direction and guidance
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, SAP or similar tax software and general ledger system.
  • A proactive mindset and keen analytical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
