The Linux Platform Engineer is responsible for the end‑to‑end engineering, operations, and reliability of enterprise Red Hat Linux platforms across cloud and hybrid environments. The role focuses on building secure, resilient, and highly automated Linux platforms that enable business agility and support Absa’s Platform‑as‑a‑Service strategy.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with cross‑functional stakeholders to ensure operational stability, drive strategic delivery, and uplift engineering capability within the team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Linux Platform Engineering & Operations
Design, install, configure, harden, and maintain enterprise Linux platforms across on‑prem and cloud environments.
Assist with daily IT incidents and adhere to SLA’s
Implement logged change requests
Manage system services, user access controls, storage, file permissions, and full OS lifecycle in line with security and compliance standards.
Perform advanced system tuning and analysis to optimise CPU, memory, disk, and network performance.
Support and migrate Linux workloads into cloud platforms (AWS/Azure).
2. Technical Troubleshooting & Service Reliability
Diagnose and resolve platform incidents including boot failures, access issues, service outages, and performance degradations.
Conduct structured problem management and root‑cause analysis to drive permanent fixes and platform stability.
Support patching cycles and resolve patch‑related issues as required.
3. Cloud & Infrastructure Platform Management
Architect, configure, and operate Linux workloads across cloud and hybrid infrastructure.
Integrate Linux platforms with core services such as compute, networking, storage, identity, and load balancing.
Ensure all implementations align with enterprise architecture, security, and governance standards.
4. Performance Optimization, Monitoring & Observability
Analyse system logs, telemetry, and metrics to proactively enhance platform performance and availability.
Define operational health indicators, alerting thresholds, and SRE‑aligned observability standards.
5. Automation & Engineering Excellence
Champion automation‑first principles using scripting and Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools.
Standardise builds, configurations, and operational processes to improve consistency, reliability, and delivery velocity.
6. Documentation, Mentorship & Capability Uplift
Maintain platform documentation, runbooks, operational procedures, and knowledge articles.
Mentor and guide Linux engineers to support continuous improvement and skills development within the team.
Key Skills & Experience
Minimum of 5 years experience
Strong expertise in enterprise Linux engineering and operations, particularly Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Advanced experience with AWS and cloud‑native Linux workloads.
Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and uplift engineering teams.
Deep troubleshooting capability across Linux internals, performance tuning, and system reliability.
Proficiency in automation, scripting, and IaC tooling.
Experience operating Linux platforms across cloud and hybrid infrastructure.
Strong stakeholder engagement and cross‑team collaboration skills.
