Reporting to the Manager of Disability Management, the WCB Disability Claims Specialist is responsible for proactive end-to-end WCB claims management across Canada. The Disability Management Specialist will coordinate claims reporting, tracking, objections, appeals, and facilitate return to work to minimize lost time, while ensuring compliance with various WCB policies and legislation. In the role, you will directly manage complex worker’s compensation claims by applying comprehensive case management principles in close collaboration with human resources and operations to reduce the financial impact of occupational injury/illness claims.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure accurate and timely reporting to the provincial workers compensation board
Determine the relationship between the mechanism of injury, the diagnosis and the relationship to entitlement by gathering and analyzing relevant information
Advise managers, HR and Business leader on best practices for all work-related injuries/illness while meeting legislative and contractual requirements
Work closely with stakeholders to develop early and safe return to work plans, collaborate with managers to develop, implement and monitor return to work plans based on functional information supplied by heath care providers and/or WCB focusing on reducing claim duration and encouraging timely recovery
Prepare claim appeals including performing file reviews and drafting formal employer submissions to support claims cost relief
Maintain confidential and sensitive information, including documentation/records and relevant details throughout the life of claim
Provide leadership support and communicate effectively with all stakeholders including mgmt., provincial WCB, healthcare professionals, employees and unions
Develop injury and trending analysis for all regions
Develop and implement Disability Management training sessions
Prepare detailed statistical trend analysis and develop reports and presentations including the preparation of graphs and charts
Creating WCB clearance certificates and completing contractor agreements
Initiate and lead return to work meetings with all stakeholders when required
Support the field H&S Team with respect to all disability management related matters
Additional tasks as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
College Diploma or University Degree specializing in Human Resources
2-3 years of experience managing a full case load of complex physical and mental health occupational injury claims
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to professionally communicate both verbally and written with employees and outside partners
Broad understanding of disability management specifically workers compensation
Comprehensive and/or working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Employment Standards Act
Must be well organized and detailed oriented
Self-starting proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment
Proficient in using Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, and ability to learn HRIS
Valid G driver’s license and access to a vehicle as travel is required
Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines
Bilingual fluency in English and French is an asset
