Purpose of the Role

Based at our new Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) manufacturing facility in Kilkenny, Ireland, the Global Engineering function has an opening for a Senior Technical Engineer Cyber Security within the Data Systems and IT Support team.  The team is responsible for the development, deployment and sustainability of manufacturing data systems across ADC’s global operations, enabling best‑in‑class solutions that support the company’s Factory 4.0 initiatives. This role is a critical part of the Operational Technology (OT) Engineering function and has a strong focus on OT cyber security, risk management, and cross‑company programme leadership.

The primary purpose of the role is to lead the design, coordination, and governance of secure OT systems across the Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) Manufacturing Unit (MU), including systems operated by a Third‑Party Company hosting Abbott equipment and processes on their site.

You will ensure that OT systems, process equipment, and associated hardware/software integrations meet Abbott’s security, reliability, and compliance requirements. This includes requirements definition, system design, security controls, vendor engagement, cybersecurity assessments, testing, validation, and ongoing support. A key responsibility is ensuring that all OT systems, whether on an Abbott site or on a third‑party site, operate within a robust security posture, comply with Abbott standards, and remain aligned to both regulatory expectations and evolving cyber threats.

Key Responsibilities

OT Cyber Security & Governance

  • Lead the OT cyber security programme for Abbott equipment and systems operated on third‑party sites.

  • Ensure alignment between Abbott cybersecurity standards, IT policies, and third‑party operational practices.

  • Implement and maintain secure system architectures, network segmentation, user access controls, patching strategies, and cybersecurity monitoring.

  • Conduct or coordinate risk assessments, security reviews, and vulnerability remediation.

  • Act as the primary Abbott interface for OT security issues with the third‑party operator.

Cross‑Company Programme Leadership

  • Manage a structured programme of work involving Abbott Engineering, Abbott IT, and third‑party technical teams.

  • Coordinate system access, data flows, change controls, and security governance between organisations.

  • Ensure all parties understand requirements, deliverables, timelines, and cybersecurity responsibilities.

  • Facilitate communication between technical and non‑technical stakeholders at all levels.

System & Technology Development

  • Develop, qualify, and implement integrated, secure OT systems that support MU performance and compliance.

  • Identify system risks, propose enhancements, and implement solutions aligned with MU KPIs and operational excellence.

  • Produce robust design, analysis, and validation documentation consistent with regulatory and quality standards.

Training & Support

  • Provide training to internal and third‑party personnel on OT systems, cybersecurity expectations, and secure operating procedures.

  • Act as SME for process equipment, OT infrastructure, and secure systems integration.

Quality, Compliance & EHS

  • Maintain and continually improve site Quality Systems in accordance with corporate, divisional, and regulatory requirements.

  • Support internal and external audits, providing expert technical and cybersecurity input.

  • Promote adherence to EHS regulations and Abbott safety standards.

Continuous Improvement & Technical Development

  • Stay current with evolving OT cyber security threats, control strategies, and industry best practices.

  • Identify opportunities to enhance system robustness, efficiency, cost‑effectiveness, and security.

  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) by implementing secure, scalable system and software solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Software Engineering, Cyber Security, or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years in a similar role, with experience in in OT, systems engineering, control systems, or cyber‑security‑related roles:

  • Demonstrated experience in secure system integration, control and instrumentation, electronic engineering, or software development.

  • Proven success delivering engineering or cybersecurity solutions in a production or regulated environment.

  • Ability to develop structured plans, manage multi‑stakeholder programmes, and deliver secure, compliant solutions to complex technical challenges.
