Raytheon’s Systems Engineering and Test Capabilities (SE&TC) Surface Radars & Sensors Center is seeking Senior Systems Engineers interested in ocean engineering. Our Portsmouth, RI team primarily supports programs in the naval undersea and naval surface domains, including sensor systems, mine countermeasures, submarines, torpedoes, combat systems, and ship architecture/integration. Our engineers perform underwater acoustics analysis and tracking, develop and manage system requirements, integrate hardware and software, develop test plans and procedures, debug and evaluate system functions and interfaces, and verify system requirements in support of final sell-off to the customer. We put our systems together, exercise them in the lab or in the field, measure and analyze performance, and ensure our products work the first time and every time.

This role involves heavy travel to customer sites, supporting independent shipyard activities alongside the customer, with reach-back support from the home team. You must be able to go underway on naval craft as needed, working directly with customers to support command and control activities and providing oversight during critical operations. You'll be expected to collaborate across disciplines and partner to implement solutions while working autonomously with limited oversight. This position requires technical expertise, adaptability, and the ability to make decisions independently to drive the success of complex projects and field operations.

What You Will Do

  • Travel extensively to customer sites, supporting independent shipyard activities and providing on-site technical expertise.
  • Go underway on naval craft as needed to oversee and support system operations, evaluations, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide reach-back support to ensure smooth coordination with the home team during shipyard and field operations.
  • Prepare and present results in reports and briefings to internal or external stakeholders.
  • Detect and diagnose system failures, identify root causes, and propose corrective actions.
  • Perform integration, verification, and field qualification testing/reporting to ensure the system under test performs according to specifications/requirements.
  • Travel, domestic, to support customer events, with an expected travel requirement not exceeding 50%.

What You Will Learn

After completion of comprehensive on-the-job training, the candidate will be a part of a team supporting Systems Engineering and Test Capabilities (SE&TC) activities across the product development lifecycle.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Experience with identifying root causes of system failures.
  • Experience in test facility or field environment supporting integration and/or verification.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience with tools, such as MATLAB or Python, for data analysis and automation.
  • Experience with underwater acoustics analysis, sensor systems, or naval system development.
  • Experience in drafting daily test reports by gathering and synthesizing critical data from the day, presenting concise updates on operational status, risks, and key actions, and ensuring information is communicated clearly to stakeholders.
  • Experience working under pressure in high-stakes environments by prioritizing tasks, making sound decisions quickly, and maintaining focus to deliver accurate and timely results while managing competing demands.
  • Experience analyzing system performance metrics and applying optimization techniques to enhance efficiency and functionality.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
