About the Role
The purpose of this role is to apply strong scientific, engineering and mathematical expertise to deliver high‑quality technical solutions with minimal supervision. The position requires the ability to solve complex problems, contribute to cross‑functional initiatives, and drive innovation by integrating knowledge from related technical disciplines. This role will be based at our TPM in Fermoy, Cork.
Key Responsibilities
Independently plan and execute small‑ to medium‑scale engineering projects, using established methods and equipment to deliver against scope, cost and schedule.
Manage multiple concurrent assignments, building and tracking project schedules, coordinating with internal teams and external partners to ensure successful execution.
Maintain strong project controls by monitoring cost, schedule and deliverables, developing effective execution strategies, and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
Conduct economic analyses and feasibility studies to compare project alternatives and support delivery of financial targets.
Benchmark internally and externally to identify emerging trends, insights and best practices that inform future planning.
Monitor environmental, technical and operational changes to anticipate risks and opportunities, and prepare appropriate response plans.
Independently design and/or lead the design of products, systems, processes or equipment, applying advanced engineering theories and techniques.
Design and lead complex experiments involving multiple variables; collect and analyse data; and communicate actionable findings and recommendations to diverse stakeholder groups.
Create or enhance designs and specifications for intermediate to complex engineering problems, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
Lead data collection and analysis to uncover trends, relationships, and insights that enable informed decision-making and problem resolution.
Diagnose and evaluate complex interdisciplinary challenges, test hypotheses, assess impacts across technical and business dimensions, and recommend sound solutions.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing methods, designs, and processes, sharing best practices, and encouraging adoption across teams.
Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels using both formal and informal communication channels tailored to audience needs.
Build strong, collaborative relationships with colleagues, contractors and vendors, fostering trust and aligning on shared goals.
Mentor and support engineers and cross-functional partners by sharing technical expertise, providing constructive feedback, and guiding professional development.
Support team capability development through technical and organisational mentoring.
Ensure full compliance with all applicable quality, environmental, health, safety, and energy (EHS&E) regulations, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance requirements.
Understand and mitigate risks associated with design changes and compliance considerations.
Consistently deliver high-quality work in alignment with regulatory and organisational standards.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or a closely related discipline is preferred. Equivalent technical experience combined with demonstrated competence may also be considered.
A minimum of 7+ years of relevant engineering and/or operational experience is desired.
Experience working in a GMP-regulated environment is highly advantageous.
Demonstrated technical competency within an engineering discipline, with strong understanding of engineering principles, concepts, and industry practices.
Experience analysing complex data or problems involving multiple competing factors, using sound judgment within defined procedures.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and stakeholder groups.
Proven ability to articulate ideas clearly verbally, in writing and through presentations while navigating differing perspectives.
Background in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or other regulated sectors is preferred; relevant experience in comparable industries will also be considered.
