General Motors

Senior AV Network Engineer

Sunnyvale, California, United States of America Full time

Job Description

Role Overview

As a Senior AV Network Engineer in the AV Core Infrastructure (ACI) organization, you are an architect and site reliability engineer for the secure hybrid network fabric that powers the global AV development pipeline. You are responsible for the high-performance connectivity required to move petabytes of sensor data from physical test benches into our cloud runtimes.

This role treats the network as software. You will lead the design of architectures that bridge the gap between on-prem validation and test worker pools and our GCP cloud environments. Your mission is to ensure the network is never a bottleneck for developer velocity, applying SRE principles to maintain a seamless, secure, and resilient Data Flywheel for GM's Vehicle Autonomy mission.

Key Responsibilities

Network as Software & SRE Operations

  • Treat Network as Code (NaC): Lead the transition toward fully automated, software-defined infrastructure where all network changes are version-controlled, peer-reviewed, and deployed via CI/CD pipelines.

  • SLO Ownership: Define, monitor, and own critical Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for network performance, focusing on latency, throughput, and availability metrics that impact the AV engineering pipeline.

  • Toil Reduction: Apply SRE principles to identify and automate repetitive manual tasks, ensuring the team remains focused on high-value architectural improvements.

  • Observability: Build and maintain advanced telemetry and monitoring stacks to provide real-time visibility into the health of hybrid interconnects and on-prem validation pools.

Hybrid Network Architecture & Strategy

  • Design and scale the global backbone connecting on-prem data centers, test tracks, and public cloud providers (primarily GCP Interconnect and potentially Azure ExpressRoute).

  • Architect secure, multi-tenant network segments that isolate sensitive AV intellectual property while allowing high-speed access for developer tools and automated build processes.

  • Develop "infrastructure-as-code" templates to enable self-service networking for AV developers and ML researchers.

Data Ingestion & On-Prem Validation Connectivity

  • Optimize the end-to-end data path from hardware ingestion points through the secure cloud network and into production storage/runtimes.

  • Ensure the networking requirements for on-prem validation and test worker pools are met, providing the low-latency, high-reliability paths necessary for real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations.

  • Collaborate with hardware systems teams to ensure validation pools are seamlessly integrated into the ACI cloud-native IaaS/PaaS layers.

Security, Performance & Reliability

  • Implement and manage zero-trust network architectures, ensuring end-to-end encryption for data in transit without sacrificing the throughput required for massive AV training sets.

  • Manage "Error Budgets" for network services, balancing the need for rapid feature deployment with the requirement for extreme system stability.

  • Act as the final escalation point for complex network outages, using professional-grade packet analysis and telemetry to resolve multi-dimensional issues across the stack.

Expertise and Complexity

Level 7 Professional Judgment

  • Strategic Problem Solving: Resolves unique, multidimensional network challenges where no clear precedent exists, particularly in the convergence of legacy and next-gen AV network requirements.

  • Independent Analysis: Analyzes the trade-offs between various interconnect strategies and presents executive-level recommendations to AV Infrastructure leadership.

  • Functional Impact: Decisions made in this role directly impact the safety and reliability of the AV engineering pipeline by ensuring consistent data delivery for validation and training.

Technical Domain Knowledge

  • Recognized expert in high-performance networking (BGP, EVPN, VXLAN) and deep understanding of data center fabrics.

  • Advanced proficiency in Cloud Networking (VPC design, Shared VPCs, Cloud Armor, Cloud Load Balancing).

  • Deep experience with SRE and Network Automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Python, Go) and telemetry stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Network Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in large-scale enterprise, service provider networking, or SRE roles.

  • Professional-level certifications (e.g., CCNP/CCIE, Arista ACE, or Google Professional Cloud Network Engineer).

  • Proven experience applying SRE principles to networking infrastructure at scale.

  • Deep experience with hybrid cloud connectivity and high-throughput data ingestion for validation/test environments.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

  • The salary range for this role: is $170,000 to $215,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.

  • Benefits: GM offers a variety of health and wellbeing benefit programs. Benefit options include medical, dental, vision, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Accounts, retirement savings plan, sickness and accident benefits, life insurance, paid vacation & holidays, tuition assistance programs, employee assistance program, GM vehicle discounts and more.
