The Office of Legal Affairs, under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal representation and advice to the University and all of its constituent parts, including the Board of Trustees, the President, Provost, faculty and academic departments, the Office of Student Life, Human Resources, Advancement, Athletics, Public Safety, Business and Finance, and the Wexner Medical Center among many others. As one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State is a multifaceted institution, with a sophisticated and leading-edge legal practice that touches nearly every area of the law, including litigation, labor and employment, public contracting, real estate and construction, intellectual property, research and technology transfer, business transactions, taxation and benefits, administrative law, health care law, public safety and criminal law matters, federal and state constitutional and public law issues, and more.
The Senior Assistant Vice President and Associate General Counsel manages and oversees the university's litigation portfolio, including its medical and health care units; serves as lead attorney for the Office of Legal Affairs Litigation Group and supervises a team of university attorneys and paralegals within this group; manages special counsel appointments and conflict waivers on behalf of the university; provides legal advice as to pending and threatened litigation involving the university; and manages other projects as assigned. Under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, the duties of this position include providing significant and substantive advice on litigation and pre-litigation matters to university leadership, units, and departments, including the medical center and health care units; overseeing and administering day to day case management systems; working with other attorneys and/or supervising or delegating to other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff in the Office of Legal Affairs, the Ohio Attorney General's office, and special counsel responsible for litigation; and other projects as assigned. The individual in this position must be cross designated with the Ohio Attorney General's Office prior to appointment.
Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D.), graduate from an accredited law school and be a member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less. Cross-designated by the Ohio Attorney General's Office prior to appointment. Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in litigation (and more preferred); experience with public institution litigation, such as civil and sovereign immunities, public records, and Court of Claims litigation; and ability to provide legal counsel on a wide range of subjects. All university attorneys are expected to work at the highest professional level with integrity, excellent judgment, attention to detail, and discretion, and to demonstrate the highest personal and leadership characteristics of teamwork, inclusiveness, calmness, and adaptability to a broad range of issues, people, and situations.

Target Hiring Range for this position is $209,500 to $273,750 per year.
