Job Summary: The primary purpose of the work is custodial and janitorial work such as sweeping, scrubbing and waxing floors, washing windows and walls, dusting andpolishing furniture and fixtures. Work is done by hand or with powered equipment. The incumbent must on a regular and recurring basis operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, etc…) to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites located on the park

Major Duties:

  • The incumbent will serve as Seasonal Custodial Worker - Motor Vehicle Operating (MVO) with Harry S. Truman National Historic Site. Responsibilities included performing a variety of laboring, grounds and custodial duties in the upkeep of three park facilities: Visitor Center, Noland Home, and George Wallace Home. Cleaning restrooms with approved cleaning products on all locations of the park Taking out garbage and maintaining recycling program for park Vacuuming carpeted areas, sweeping, moping of other surface areas Cleaning windows, glass, and stainless-steel surfaces with approved cleaning products Dusting visitor center and Noland Home areas such as exhibit cases, televisions, VC desk, railing, and beams Sweeping, mopping, and cleaning walls in staircases, in restrooms, and areas that are high traffic locations Resupplying areas with products such as toilet paper, paper towels, and trash bags on all cans Painting of walls may be performed during the prescribed duty time Cleaning government owned vehicles (Includes: taking vehicles to car wash, using the free vacuum or vacuum on a weekly basis and at the end of the month providing or logging in total miles for each vehicle) Weighing each type of recycling product and then logging it on a form Assist with other maintenance duties as needed Area Information No Government Housing Available This position is located at Harry S Truman National Historic Site, headquartered at Independence, Missouri. Harry S Truman NHS was established by public Law 98-32 (May 23, 1983) which authorized the National Park Service to acquire the Truman Home in Independence, Missouri and to establish the National Historic Site. Subsequent legislation added four buildings to the site in Independence and five additional buildings and five acres in Grandview, 20 miles away. Harry S Truman NHS was opened to the public on May 15, 1984 and established to preserve and interpret the former home of Harry S Truman the 33rd President of the Unites States and four other family related structures, for the inspiration and benefit of present and future generations. Harry S Truman NHS is located within the city limits of Independence, Missouri, 12 miles east of Kansas City and Grandview, Missouri, 20 miles south of Independence. Both are adjacent to metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri. All park sites lie within easy access of interstate 70 and 435 and 71 Highway. Combined federal acreage for the Independence and Grandview units are 11.5 acres. Major shopping facilities, transportation, and hospitals are within a ten-mile radius. Climate is temperate, ranging from an average of 95 degrees plus in the summer to an average of 35 degrees in the winter. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT), Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints), Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment, Dexterity and Safety, Vehicle Operation, and Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order) SCREEN OUTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Performed the most difficult and complex laborer and custodial/janitorial tasks including ability to operate trucks and trailers weighing up to 10,000 pounds; properly loading and unloading various supplies and equipment; to perform work providing laboring assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, cleaning restrooms, windows, vacuuming carpets, floors, emptying trash and recyclables; operate power equipment such as floor scrubbers, floor buffers and floor strippers; and safely use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, saws, etc. Able to safely operate these vehicles/equipment in all types of traffic and weather conditions. I utilize most hand and power tools associated with these tasks including light hand and power and cleaning custodial tools. Use plumbing wrenches and channel locks to tighten loose or leaking fittings; repairs to water heaters, washing machines, lift stations, and other miscellaneous plumbing fixtures such as drinking fountains, water refill stations, pumps, compressors and condensing coils; replace washers or gaskets, and filters. I have experience performing operator maintenance on all vehicles/equipment operated (e.g. monitoring fluid levels, and checking tire pressure). Inspect and replace backcountry trail signage, repair trail water crossings and trail erosion. I perform these duties as an expert with a high degree of independence. My supervisor assigned work orally, through work orders, or with written specifications. My work was checked to see that it met compliance with work and safety standards and policies. DRIVER'S LICENSE: This position requires that the incumbent possess a valid Driver's License prior to entry on duty. You must certify that you are able to obtain.
