Discover Impactful Work:

The Platform Capabilities R&D Team within the Purification business of Thermo Fisher Scientific strives to develop next-generation building blocks that serve customer needs in downstream bioprocess purification.  We are seeking a laboratory scientist who will enjoy applying their complementary subject-matter expertise to design, synthesize, and characterize polymeric substrates or their coated analogs and collaborating to see impactful inventions through to fruition.  

A Day in the Life:

  • Build and characterize chromatography resin prototypes or base beads through robust experimental design and diligent execution of multistep suspension polymerization reactions
  • Develop and apply knowledge in technical fundamentals and customer needs to address prototyping challenges and supply ideas to our innovation pipeline
  • Expand team understanding of structure-property-performance relationships by selecting and operating material characterization or chromatography tools, applying statistical methods, and reporting results
  • Partner with R&D peers and cross-functional colleagues to refine bead designs, develop analytical capabilities, source collaborative data, draft SOPs, and ultimately drive substrate designs to commercial realization
  • Uphold a positive safety and quality culture

Keys to Success

Education

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field; MS degree with 3+ years experience; BS degree with 5+ years experience

Experience

  • Laboratory synthesis or formulation experience, preferably involving monomers, polymers, or phase-separating systems and ideally with DOE methodology
  • Experience delivering project completion to timeline
  • Teamwork experience including sharing data, problem-solving, and collaborating

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in at least one of the following areas: polymer chemistry, phase-separating systems, emulsions, porous materials, coatings, or resin formulation
  • Skilled at written and verbal communication, documenting and sharing experimental methods, data, outcomes, and conclusions to diverse audiences
  • Ability to identify issues and adapt experiments on-the-fly, a skill facilitated by strong attention to detail and a willingness to ask for help
  • Ability and interest in learning to operate diverse laboratory synthesis and particle characterization equipment such as filtration reactors, mercury porosimeters, benchtop SEMs, and chromatography equipment
  • Skilled at prioritization and navigating ambiguity with a positive demeanor

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in Massachusetts is $92,000.00–$120,000.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
