Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a temporary Science Technician I to join our Power Supply team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to provide our customers with the safe, reliable, affordable energy they depend on. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, work will generally be conducted at Swan Falls and Milner hydroelectric projects.

What does a Science Technician do for us?

They operate under supervision and oversight to safely implement project tasks and collect and manage data within defined protocols. This role possesses a basic understanding of principles and concepts of the Scientific Method, natural resources, recreation behavior, and safety while working in the field. This role will assist Resource Professionals or other technicians in implementing recreation research associated with federal license compliance requirements, gather and enter data, and operate and maintain equipment. They complete field sampling based on a randomized and stratified schedule, provide basic information summaries relative to task completion with guidance. They adhere strictly to protocols and seek guidance if protocols cannot be followed. They interface at a task level with other team employees, contractors or agency/regulators with guidance.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Basic field sampling protocols and techniques
  • Field data collection with handheld tablets; Survey 1-2-3 preferred
  • Personal safety behaviors while afield

Skills in:

  • Safely operating a four-wheel drive vehicle in all conditions
  • Data stewardship and navigating software on tablets or iPad
  • Communicating effectively with members of the public in an outdoor environment

Ability to:

  • Work effectively as a team member or independently
  • Work weekends, early and late hours
  • Learn and work in an office, shop, and field environment


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Associates degree in natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field

OR

  • Currently enrolled and within 2 years of obtaining a bachelor's degree in a natural resource or outdoor recreation program

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position walks/hikes up to 2 miles on ascents/descents and at times on steep, unconsolidated slopes, in all seasons/weather conditions, (with the ability to take self-paced breaks when needed). Lifting up to 40 lbs. to waist height, lifting up to 20 lbs. to shoulder height/overhead, and pushing/pulling up to 25 lbs. is performed occasionally. Squatting, crouching, stooping/bending, kneeling, reaching, and twisting is required frequently. Climbing is required occasionally onto/from equipment and machinery. Operation of ATVs, UTVs, jet boats, and canoes may be required to reach work locations. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
May be required to travel to remote locations, periodically staying overnight.

Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings. In order for your current position to be held for your return, qualified employees must have supervisory approval to participate and have been in their current position for at least six months.
