In this role, you work in the maintenance, construction, and repair of county rights-of-ways, stormwater conveyance, and facilities. Apply today and do what you love while enjoying the benefits of working for Sarasota County Government.Perform maintenance and repair to all bridges within Sarasota County, including concrete repairs, joint seal replacement, pressure washing, painting, vegetation removal, and any other care required for safe vehicle and pedestrian travel
Assist Skilled Trades I in repairing and installing concrete sidewalks, curbs & gutters, driveways, and handicap ramps
Assist in the maintenance and repair of all asphalt surfaces along county-maintained roadways
Use of tools and equipment associated with road repair and modifications, road cuts, and pothole repair
Setting up the required Maintenance of Traffic (M.O.T.) for safety, flagging per M.O.T. standards, and performing labor-intensive tasks associated with shoveling, spreading, and compacting asphalt
Conduct labor tasks to keep roadways and rights-of-way clear of obstructions, including removing debris and hazards from roads
Conduct manual trimming of trees for proper clearance and sight distance problems, using chainsaws, weed eaters, pole saws, and manual tools associated
Assist in the re-grading of County non-maintained roadways
Operate dump trucks, backhoes, small excavators, skid loads, front-end end loaders, and other related equipment required to maintain and repair road rights-of-way
Work Hours:
Operating hours: Monday - Friday
6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
10 hour shifts per day, 40 hour hours per week, 4 days a week
*On-Call Required
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or its equivalent
One (1) year of experience as a semi-skilled laborer in the construction, maintenance, and repair of vehicle and pedestrian travel way systems and /or road rights-of-way areas
A valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement required within six (6) months of hire. Paid for by Sarasota County
A valid Florida Driver License at the time of hire
Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years
Starting Pay Rate: $18.21 (Step 1)
Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience
