Join the Dynamic Parang Lab in the Thoracic Oncology Research Collaborative Hub (TORCH)

Position Overview: TORCH is looking to fill the position of Research Technician 3 in the laboratory of Dr. Parang. Dr. Parang is a physician-scientist and lung cancer oncologist whose lab is focused on understanding lung cancer drug resistance with a particular focus on EGFR-mutant lung cancer.

We are looking for a driven, curious individual to support senior lab members in the Parang lab and help advance several exciting projects. The individual will have a unique opportunity to work on projects that are being directly translated into clinical trials under the mentorship of Dr. Parang, Dr. Parang’s lab team, and the TORCH community.

Training provided:

  • Hands-On Training:
    • You will receive hands-on training in essential molecular biology techniques such as RNA/DNA/Protein extraction, Western Blotting, PCR genotyping, bacterial cloning, cell culture, and mouse work depending on the needs of the project assigned.
    • Once you have received the standard training we will support and provide training required for specific projects to which you are assigned.
  • Compliance and regulatory training:
    • There are regulatory and compliance-based trainings that differ depending on the work being done.  These trainings are required before any work may begin.
      • These can be either computer-based (CBLs) or in-person training.

Requirements:

  • The wet lab setting incorporates both basic biological and translational techniques.
    • Performing and assisting with a variety of molecular biology techniques, including protein/DNA/RNA isolations, Western blots, PCR techniques, bacterial cloning etc. 
    • Preparing samples for flow cytometry and cell sorting, including spectral flow cytometry 
    • Performing a large variety of cell culture techniques, including primary cell culture, generating new cell lines, and processing tissue (human and murine) into single cell suspensions 
    • Monitoring animal health
    • Performing a variety of procedures on mice, including injections, bleeding, oral gavage, weighing, handling, ear tagging, ear punching, euthanasia, etc. 
    • Processing a variety of mouse tissues and blood samples for downstream analysis 
    • Processing human blood samples and isolating human immune cell subtypes. 
  • Documentation:
    • Records, consolidates, and assists with analysis of research results.
    • Assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures by performing data analysis and other statistical techniques on sample data.
    • Summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts, assisting with writing and figure generation for manuscripts at the direction of the supervisor. 
    • Prepares research progress reports; assists senior lab members and principal investigator(s) with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts.
    • May need to independently review relevant scientific literature to ensure protocols are up to date and to troubleshoot procedures.
  • Lab Maintenance:
    • Take part in maintaining the laboratory through identified laboratory procedures and practices.
    • Sets up and operates laboratory equipment as well as routine cleaning and maintenance.
    • Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs.
    • Assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation.
    • Monitors general supply inventories and initiates procurement requests as needed.
    • Assists Lab Supervisor with organization of the lab; creating and maintaining electronic inventories of reagents (i.e. antibodies, enzymes, etc.), equipment information, and other tasks as determined.

Minimum Required Qualifications - Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, health, or other related science field or equivalent experience required. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment.  

Desired Experience (Preferred but not Required):

  • Self-motivated, and good time management skills 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (excel, word etc.)
  • Previous experience in research or a lab environment is preferred but not required. 

Commitment and Teamwork:

  • Support experiments, collaborate with fellow students and lab staff, report results, and prepare presentations.
  • A strong willingness to work in a team environment is essential.
