About This Opportunity  

This is an exciting opportunity for an early career researcher to join a nationally and internationally connected community of Indigenous researchers within the ARC Indigenous Futures Centre (ARC-IFC). Based at the Queensland Node (UQ), you will collaborate with Indigenous community researchers, HDR students, Postdoctoral Research Fellows, and senior academics across Centre nodes in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

You will have access to the Indigenous Futures Preparation Program, offering leadership and research training, mentoring, professional development, writing retreats, seed funding for innovative research, and opportunities to participate in national and international Centre activities.

Key responsibilities include: 

1. Research

  • In collaboration with the Education and Economies Theme leader/s and Chief Investigators, develop and contribute to a team-based research program that achieve national recognition and trans-sectoral impact.

  • Apply relational and transdisciplinary Indigenous research methodologies

  • Work with your supervisor, Centre community partners, and colleagues to co-design at least one research project and contribute to additional projects aligned with Centre objectives.

  • Produce high- quality research outputs consistent with ARC-IFC’s objectives, including taking a lead role in some outputs such as publications in high-quality outlets.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding, including actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding. Contribution may include serving as a Chief Investigator.

  • Active participation in the grow and development NIKI.

2. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Demonstration a track record of effective supervision and development of researcher capability, particularly for Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Make a significantly contribute to the Centre’s Indigenous Futures Preparation Program through supervision, participation, presentation, and theme related activities.

  • Facilitate engagement and development opportunities for Higher Degree Research supervisees.

  • Effectively lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • Promptly and appropriately address conflicts and grievances in line with University policies and procedures.

3. Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate citizenship behaviours align with the ARC-IFC’s Code of Conduct and UQ values.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities and ARC-IFC’s community partners and other end-users.

  • Demonstrate collaborative leadership through active participation in priority activities for the Centre.

  • Provide support to other research positions and Centre activities as needed and during other team members’ absences.

  • Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation on relevant committees such as the Conference, Workshops and Seminars Committee, the Research Committee and the Community and Partner Board.

  • Provide leadership as required in the Centre’s four Areas of Responsibility; Community Engagement; Communications and Social Media; Capacity Building; and Knowledge Transfer.

About ARC-IFC

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Futures (ARC-IFC) is a nationally funded research centre located in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL) at the University of Queensland (UQ). Led by UQ, the Centre is a consortium of seven Australian Universities including the University of Melbourne, the University of Technology Sydney, the Australian National University, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Charles Darwin University and University of Western Australia. The Centre is entirely Indigenous led and includes 18 Chief Investigators and 5 international Partner Investigators.

About You 

  • Completion of a PhD in the relevant Theme area.

  • A developing research profile in within the Theme area.

  • Demonstrated experience in authentic collaboration with Indigenous communities.

  • Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous researchers.

  • An emerging reputation supported by publications in reputable refereed journals and presentations at recognised conferences and other scholarly venues.

  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.

  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.

  • Experience in contributing meaningful to internal service roles alongside active engagement to external activities.

Appointment to this role is subject to the successful completion of relevant pre-employment checks, which may include verification of the right to work in Australia, qualifications, professional registration (e.g. AHPRA), criminal history checks, and other role-specific requirements such as mandatory immunisations, First Aid and/or CPR certification, and Blue Card checks. This may also include checks relating to gender-based violence matters or other integrity and conduct requirements.

About the Selection Process

As part of the selection process, shortlisted applicants will be required to present a seminar and mock lecture to members of the School community prior to their scheduled interview. Topics for both the seminars and lecture will be provided with adequate notice.
