R&D Protein Biochemistry - Grad Intern

What You Will Do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen’s Large Molecule Discovery organization is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative Summer Intern to join the Discovery Protein Science (DPS) group at our South San Francisco site. DPS is responsible for designing, planning and carrying out the generation of key enabling proteins to support discovery of small and large molecule therapeutics and ground-breaking novel modalities.

During this program, you will primarily engage in laboratory work, applying purification and analytical techniques to optimize antibody-based molecule production processes. Through this experience, you will gain insight into the protein production process in an industrial research setting and learn how to design and execute experiments to identify optimal strategies for producing novel antibody-based molecules. Responsibilities include assisting in the optimization of purification procedures, performing quality assessments using chromatographic and biophysical methods, as well as the following:

  • Review and summarize project-related literature.
  • Design, conduct, and troubleshoot project-related experiments.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present results internally and engage with coworkers in scientific discussions.
  • Document experimental procedures, observations, and results in electronic lab notebooks to ensure data integrity and reproducibility.

Basic Qualifications:

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for a grad internship at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Currently enrolled in an MBA program for an MBA internship OR a Master’s program for a Master’s internship OR a PharmD program for a PharmD internship OR Ph.D. for a PhD internship from an accredited college or university and completion of the first year of MBA OR Master’s OR Pharm D OR Ph.D. program before the internship starts
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university following the potential internship
  • Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
  • Student must be located in the United States for the duration of the [internship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree concentration(s) in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biophysics or related fields
  • With minimum 6 months of laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated scientific analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Hands-on experience operating AKTA chromatography systems for protein purification
  • Broad training in analytical techniques (SDS-PAGE, HPLC, LC-MS)
  • Understanding of antibody structure and biophysical properties
  • Understanding of common strategies for protein expression and purification
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

The base pay range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $30-$40 per hour
