S&P Global

Principle Engineer

Virtual, United Kingdom Full time

About the Role:

Grade Level (for internal use):

15

Role Summary

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the advancement of our AI capabilities across architecture, strategy, and hands-on development. You will be our senior-most technical expert for agentic workflows, multi-agent systems, and AI frameworks, setting technical direction, mentoring senior engineers, and driving adoption of modern AI practices across product and platform teams. This is an individual contributor role (no direct reports) with significant scope, cross-functional influence, and a mandate to deliver clear architecture, documentation, and measurable organizational impact.

You will architect and build production-grade agentic systems (e.g., autonomous and tool-using agents, orchestration/routing, evaluation and guardrails), establish agentic standards, and partner with Security, Risk, and EDO to ensure safety, compliance, and scalability. You will also guide teams in AI product strategy—evaluating build/buy/partner decisions and aligning roadmaps with business outcomes.

What You’ll Do

Architecture & Strategy

  • Define reference architectures for agentic systems (single- and multi-agent patterns, planners, tool/skills frameworks, routing, memory, and long-running agents).
  • Establish standards for agentic solutions: prompt/version management, evaluation, regression testing, observability, feedback loops, safety/guardrails, cost governance, and performance SLAs.
  • Architect the end-to-end Agentic SDLC—including design principles, development workflows, evaluation pipelines, security/guardrails, deployment patterns, observability, governance, and continuous improvement practices for agentic applications and frameworks.
  • Author clear, high-quality architecture decision records (ADRs), strategy papers, and reference implementations.

Hands-on Engineering

  • Build production-ready agentic services and frameworks, including tool integrations (APIs, function calling), vector search, and workflow orchestration.
  • Implement robust evaluation pipelines (offline/online), automated guardrails (content, privacy, bias), and telemetry (latency, quality, cost).
  • Ship reusable SDKs, templates, and golden paths to accelerate teams adopting AI capabilities.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Mentor senior/staff engineers; conduct design reviews; raise the bar for engineering excellence, documentation, and operational rigor.

Governance & Risk

  • Ensure designs comply with security requirements; drive secure-by-default patterns.

Change & Adoption

  • Champion AI literacy and agentic-first design thinking; run enablement workshops and internal demos; measure business impact and share wins.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years in applied ML/AI or ML platform/LLMOps roles; proven track record as a Principal/Distinguished-level IC or equivalent scope.
  • Expert in one or more language: Python, TypeScript, etc. Strong software design, testing, CI/CD, and observability skills.
  • Deep experience with LLMs and agentic systems: tool/function calling, planning, memory, routing, multi-agent orchestration, and long-running workflows.
  • Practical LLMOps: prompt management, offline/online evaluation, automated guardrails, dataset/versioning, data pipelines, human feedback, A/B tests, and cost/latency optimization.
  • Cloud experience (preferably AWS)—including security, networking, identity, key management, and IaC (Terraform).
  • Strong communicator with a history of producing clear architecture docs, diagrams, and decision records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or equivalent platforms; familiarity with LangChain, Semantic Kernel, or similar frameworks.
  • Knowledge of model lifecycle
  • Familiarity with AI safety techniques (content moderation, jailbreak resistance, PII redaction, policy-as-code), and governance (model cards, evaluations).
  • Background in event-driven and streaming architectures similar to Kafka/Event Hubs), and workflow engines
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and influencing senior stakeholders (Product, Security, Legal, Data, Operations).

Core Competencies

  • Systems Thinking: Designs scalable, evolvable architectures with clear boundaries, interfaces, and SLAs.
  • Technical Writing: Produces concise, actionable documentation and ADRs; clarifies trade-offs.
  • Pragmatic Innovation: Balances speed with safety, cost, and maintainability; ships incrementally with telemetry.
  • Mentorship & Influence: Elevates peers through reviews, pairing, and exemplars; leads without authority.
  • Operational Rigor: Designs for reliability, observability, and cost-efficiency from day one.
  • Security & Compliance Mindset: Builds privacy-by-design and auditable workflows aligned to UK/EU regulations.
