Job Summary: The deputy chief of staff is a senior physician leader who supports the Chief of Staff in overseeing clinical operations, quality of care, and alignment with VA mission, policies, and strategic goals. The role combines direct clinical leadership with administrative and programmatic oversight across services and facilities. The deputy chief of staff reports directly to the chief of staff and serves as a key clinical and administrative advisor for the VA medical center.

Provides direct patient care 20% of time in trained specialty providing consulting, procedures and inpatient/outpatient care services as applicable. Provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for assigned medical services and programs (for example, Dental, imaging, geriatrics, physical medicine, etc). Serves as lead physician for quality improvement initiatives and utilization management. Continuously assesses and improves the processes of care delivery to enhance patient safety. Participates in strategic planning and policy development, translating national and network directives into local clinical practice and performance goals. Collaborates with other Medical Center leaders to develop initiatives and programs in order to ensure coordination of service, reduction of redundancies, and enhancement of cost effectiveness, efficiency and overall productivity. Actively participates on committees, task forces, and other groups at the Medical Center and affiliates to assist in policy changes, as needed. Develops an interdisciplinary team of innovative, highly motivated individuals who are continuously striving for excellence in patient care and customer service. Develops a team that is creative in its efforts to build and maintain a patient-centered, cost-effective, integrated health care system. Demonstrates leadership in addressing ethical issues that impact clients and staff in/or beyond the organization/local health care community. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Several years of progressive leadership in a complex health care setting (e.g., service chief, section chief, or medical director). Demonstrated success leading interdisciplinary teams and managing change to improve quality, safety, access, or patient flow. Experience using performance metrics, data analytics, or dashboards to guide clinical and operational decisions. Prior VA experience or strong familiarity with VA/VHA policies, integrated systems, and Veteran-centered care models. Experience working with accreditation and regulatory bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, OIG, CMS) and leading survey preparation or corrective action plans.
