The Role:
This is a 6-month paid internship, ideally full-time (8 hours per day / 40 hours per week), office-based with flexibility.
There is a possibility to extend for an additional 6 months based on performance and business needs.
As a Payment Operations Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in payment processing, reconciliation, and financial operations, while working closely with experienced team members in a fast-paced, multinational environment. You will help ensure that all of the merchants using the SumUp platform receive their payouts on time.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Support the daily validation of payment files for submission to third parties;
- Assist with daily settlement and reconciliation of payment and payout files between SumUp, third-party processors, and bank accounts, helping to ensure all mismatches are handled in a timely manner and all merchant and customer accounts are accurately maintained;
- Help design and deliver accurate reports on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, supporting the relevant checks and controls on all payment and payout files to highlight any discrepancies;
- Support the operations team in handling merchant queries linked to payments and payouts, including day-to-day coordination with third-party processors and banking partners on payment, collections, and payout-related activities;
- Contribute to the identification of ongoing enhancements in the settlements and reconciliation process;
- Support monthly accounting and reconciliation of payout bank statements in SumUp's accounting software;
- Assist with the review and reconciliation of open items in all acquirer and merchant accounts in SumUp's accounting software;
- Support the reconciliation and analysis of automatically-posted settlements in SumUp's accounting software;
You'd Be Great for This Role If You:
- Are a 3rd or 4th year student in Finance, Business, Accounting, or a related degree;
- Have an interest in payments or financial services, with any previous exposure being a plus;
- Are proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel;
- Have some knowledge of payment processing systems or tools such as Mobile Wallets (e.g. PayPal, Apple Pay, Revolut) or Point-of-Sale (POS) systems;
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and are a strong team player, able to interact with colleagues at all levels;
- Have strong time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and work under strict deadlines;
- Are flexible and open to change, able to adapt well to shifting priorities;
- Are enthusiastic, dedicated, and willing to learn, with a "can-do" attitude and a proactive work ethic;
- Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a natural curiosity to gather information and probe for facts;
