Job Summary: Pasting / Casting Department (Grid Casting Operator)

Position Summary:

Operate, monitor, and maintain Wirtz ConCast continuous grid casting machinery to produce lead-acid battery negative (and optionally positive) grids with precision in dimensions, alloy composition, and structural integrity. Maintain quality standards while ensuring safety compliance and minimal lead scrap.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Set up, calibrate, and operate ConCast CC‑series machinery according to production specifications—thickness, grid width, lug placement, alloy type (calcium, antimony, tin, pure lead).
  • Control melt level, flow, and system temperature using process control systems.
  • Monitor the casting process continuously to maintain precise thickness/weight tolerances and zero-scrap lead casting.
  • Conduct routine maintenance—including mold/lug chamber cleaning, lubricating guide pins, and replacing worn components or mold coats.
  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections using gauges; sample and document quality parameters.
  • Identify process deviations or quality defects; initiate corrective measures or escalate to supervision immediately.
  • Keep accurate production, maintenance, and quality logs via manual or computerized systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols including PPE usage, lead handling, and housekeeping requirements.

    Requirements:
     
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years in continuous or gravity casting in manufacturing (e.g., metal or battery plate casting).
  • Mechanical aptitude with ability to troubleshoot production equipment.
  • Experience monitoring process parameters (temperature, flow, cooling).
  • Competency using gauges, meters, and data systems for quality control.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for prolonged periods, and work in noisy environments.

Preferred:

  • Experience specifically with Wirtz ConCast or similar continuous grid casting systems.
  • Familiarity with lead-alloy chemistry used in battery grids.
  • Forklift certification or experience operating material handling equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Typical battery manufacturing environment with moderate-to-high noise levels.
  • Exposure to high-temperature surfaces and hot lead-metal systems.
  • PPE required: safety glasses, gloves, respirators/face shields, protective apparel.
  • Physical demands: standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Shift work including, weekends, or overtime, as production requires.
  • Interaction with lead and related alloys; strictly enforced lead hygiene protocols.

  

Salary Range:

$32,300.00-$43,100.000
