Job Summary: This position is assigned to the Transportation Section in Logistics at the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and is responsible for providing a wide range of transportation duties such as transporting patients (and their family members), employees, medical/general supplies, delivering mail and emergency runs as they arise.

Major Duties:

  • Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Operate agency owned and leased vehicles up to and those with an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 32,000 pounds and may require air brakes Operate both passenger buses and non-passenger vehicles up to 50,000 pounds Operate passenger buses that are equipped with medical support equipment to transport patients Assist warehouse to transport supplies as well as federal mail Perform daily preventive maintenance on all assigned vehicles including the cleanliness of the vehicle's interior and exterior, ensure engine fluids are at sufficient operating levels, visually inspect lights and turn signals, and ensure tire pressures are satisfactory Operate special mechanical equipment such as wheelchair lifts, fold-up tailgate and wheelchair restraint security system Complete and submit all operating records and motor vehicle accident reports Secure and transport agency initiated documentation to and from various locations Report any mechanical problems for repair Perform other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not Authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications: PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Moderate exertion is required in operating, turning, backing and controlling vehicles that carry heavy loads and/or large numbers of people. In addition to good vision, the work will require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or stooping, Occasionally handles objects weighing over 150 pounds with assistance while loading and unloading trucks. The Motor Vehicle Operator drives in all types of traffic and weather conditions and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents and is subjected to noise levels up to 85dbs for up to eight hours a day. May be required to work staggered shifts to include holidays. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
