Manager, Site Reliability Engineering – Business Operations (BizOps)
The Payment Gateway Services BizOps team is looking for a Manager, Site Reliability Engineering who can independently lead teams, solve complex problems, design scalable solutions, and drive the delivery of reliability and automation outcomes across Mastercard. This role is for a hands‑on leader who sets direction, owns outcomes, and leads by example while empowering engineers to execute at scale.

Business Operations is leading the DevOps transformation at Mastercard through our tooling and by being an advocate for change and standards throughout the development, quality, release, and product organizations. We need a people leader with a strong technical foundation, an appetite for change, and the ability to push boundaries through automation, standardization, and engineering excellence. Proven experience working across development, operations, and product teams to set priorities, influence roadmaps, and build strong partnerships is essential.
Mission
The mission of Business Operations is to be the production readiness steward for the platform. As a Manager, Site Reliability Engineering, you are accountable for ensuring this mission is delivered through both technical leadership and people leadership.
This is accomplished by partnering closely with developers, architects, and product teams to design, build, implement, and support resilient technology services. The Manager ensures operational criteria such as system availability, capacity, performance, monitoring, self‑healing, and deployment automation are designed into solutions upfront and consistently implemented throughout the delivery lifecycle.
Business Operations plays a critical role in leading the DevOps transformation at Mastercard through our tooling, operating model, and by advocating for change and standards across development, quality, release, and product organizations. As a manager, you lead this transformation by setting direction, coaching teams, and driving execution.
We accomplish this transformation by supporting daily operations with a strong focus on triage, root cause analysis, and business impact, while continuously shifting left to become more proactive in the development lifecycle. The goal is to proactively manage production health and change activities to maximize customer experience and increase the overall value of supported applications.
BizOps teams also play a key role in risk management, tying all operational activities together with an overarching responsibility for compliance, resiliency, and risk mitigation across all environments. As a manager, you are accountable for ensuring these practices are embedded into team ways of working.
A core focus of BizOps is to streamline and standardize application support activities and centralize points of interaction for both internal and external partners. This requires strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership across globally distributed teams.
Ultimately, the role of BizOps is to align Product and Customer‑Focused priorities with Operational needs. As a Manager, Site Reliability Engineering, you ensure feedback loops are in place with development partners and that operational insights are used to continuously improve the customer experience.
Responsibilities
○ Lead and improve the full lifecycle of services—from inception and design, through deployment, operation, and continuous improvement.
○ Provide technical and operational leadership to the team, setting standards and ensuring consistent execution.
○ Analyze ITSM activities across the platform and drive feedback loops with development teams to address systemic operational gaps and resiliency risks.
○ Partner with development and product teams to support services before launch through system design consulting, capacity planning, and production readiness reviews.
○ Ensure services are maintained post‑launch through effective monitoring, alerting, and measurement of availability, latency, and system health.
○ Drive sustainable scaling of systems through automation and architectural improvements that increase reliability and delivery velocity.
○ Own and evolve the application CI/CD pipeline, ensuring strong operational gating, quality controls, and alignment with DevOps best practices.
○ Lead incident response practices, including major incidents and blameless postmortems, ensuring learning is translated into preventative action.
○ Take a holistic, systems‑level approach to problem solving by connecting signals across the full technology stack to optimize mean time to recover.
○ Lead and manage a globally distributed team across multiple technology hubs and time zones.
○ Mentor, coach, and develop engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
○ BS degree in Computer Science or a related technical field involving coding, or equivalent practical experience.
○ Strong background in scripting, CI/CD pipeline management, and software design.
○ Proven ability to lead teams with a strong sense of ownership, accountability, and execution.
○ Systematic problem‑solving approach, coupled with strong communication skills and the ability to influence across organizational boundaries.
○ Demonstrated experience debugging complex systems, optimizing code paths, and automating operational workflows.
○ Experience supporting multiple stakeholders and making sound decisions under pressure with a strong sense of urgency.
○ Deep interest in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large‑scale distributed systems.
○ Strong appetite for change and continuous improvement, with experience working across development, operations, and product teams to drive outcomes.
○ Experience with industry‑standard CI/CD tools such as Git/BitBucket, Jenkins, Maven, Artifactory, and Chef, including designing and implementing high‑quality, low‑friction delivery pipelines from development through production.
