Job Summary: About the Position: The Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of tasks involved with the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities, and equipment. This position involves a mixture of electrical, plumbing, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work. This position is located at Guthrie Army Health Clinic, Fort Drum, New York.

Major Duties:

  • Evaluate repairs needed for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC equipment.
  • Assemble various components of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems such as valves, pumps, and compressors
  • Estimate material and pipe size requirements to complete plumbing work.
  • Complete installation, repair, and modification of electrical systems and components.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Maintenance Mechanic tasks such as installing new electrical lines, circuits, and equipment. I can perform plumbing tasks such as threading and pipe bending. I am able to install commercial ventilation equipment systems for heating and cooling. I can perform general contracting work such as installing walls and fixtures. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Moderate physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Equipment requires moderate physical effort in that heavy chains, bars, hooks, etc., must be lifted and properly secured. Duties may require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Requires considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light-to-moderate effort is used to turn valves and controls. Works in stretched, cramped and awkward positions. Position may require considerable standing while working on ladders or scaffolds. Working Conditions: Incumbent works inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Is exposed to caustic and dangerous chemicals. The presence of sewage, gases and fumes such as methane, chlorine, and carbon monoxide may require the wearing and/or use of protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and SOPs. May incur contact with running motors, pumps, and machinery. Cuts, bruises, and broken bones may result from accidents. Works in cramped quarters inside and outside; exposed to mud and water; dirty, dusty and greasy conditions and injury from use of power and hand-tools and occasional use of caustic soda and hot lead.
