Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible to receive linens in the laundry department as well as fill linen cart orders and complete distribution to meet the needs of the hospital. Duties will encompass all Mercy Medical Center Des Moines hospitals (Main Campus and West Lakes).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Fill and prepare linen carts for delivery to floor/units. Fill clinic orders. This has specific daily check-off lists for each day of production.

· Loads soiled linen for pick-up and receive clean linens from vendor for cart preparation and distribution to all service areas.

· Usage of push/pull carts for linen retrieval and delivery on varying surfaces.

· Perform a variety of linen processing tasks, which involve hand operations. Included are: dryers and washer operations. Hand operations include folding, sorting, and placing in proper carts. Filling exchange cars to set par levels.

· Must meet production standards as outlined by department.

· Multi-tasking with high efficiency.

· Maintains high level of cleanliness in the work area. Sanitize linen carts daily and wipe them clean.

· Must be able to identify defective linens while filling carts.

· Answers phone fill STAT requests and log information, relays message to supervisor as well as checking department voicemail system to fulfill customers’ requests.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Must possess basic computer skills for annual education, benefits enrollment, payroll viewing inventory, par levels tracking, printing of cart sheets and other information needed in daily duties.

· Ability to communicate in spoken English, as well as ability to read, write and comprehend

English required.

· High school diploma or GED preferred.

· Perform simple calculations.

· Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three (3) months of hire.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67%-100% of workday, Frequent = 34%-66% of workday, Occasional =33% or less of workday)

CONSTANT

· Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks to perform cleaning duties.

· Standing: With some freedom to alternate between standing and walking.

· Lifting: Up to 50-75 pounds of clean linen and soil linen.

· Pushing/Pulling: Linen carts (40 pounds of force) on floors and linen carts (up to 25 pounds of force) on floors and elevators.

FREQUENT

· Repetitive hand motions: Wrists, hands, fingers

· Talking and communication: With other team members and the other staff member through out the daily activities.

· Bending and stooping: To pick up linen and load linen carts

OCCASIONAL

· Climbing: Ascending stairs.

· Hearing: Listening for bells, buzzers and the rhythm of machines to notice malfunctions.

PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting > 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.

Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 lbs. (push/pull force) to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.

VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:

· Visual inspection involving quality checks, operation of machines and moving carts.

INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Ability to perform repetitive work.

· Ability to perform under deadline pressure.

· Ability to perform a variety of duties, changing from one task to another without loss if loss of efficiency or composure.

· Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment.

· Ability to perform in an organized, timely fashion.

· Ability to inform supervisor of any problems, safety concerns, etc.

· Ability to report any malfunctions of equipment to supervisor immediately, if not able to resolve on own.

· Ability to interact with co-workers and floor/unit staff.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT: Standard medical, nursing, special, or office equipment found in the assigned area.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

· Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with its specifications, for preventing contact with the above materials.

· Constant noise of washing and drying machines. Exposure to moving mechanical equipment, electrical current, moving carts (300 to 400 pound loads) plus weight of cart.
