The Technical Service Engineer plays a key role in sustaining, supporting and continuously improving critical on‑premises virtualisation and hyper‑converged infrastructure (HCI) platforms across government ICT environments.
Working under the direction of the Compute Technical Lead, this role ensures core compute systems remain performant, secure, resilient and highly available. You’ll provide hands-on support across platforms such as VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Microsoft Hyper‑V, and backup technologies including HYCU and Data Protection Manager (DPM).
This position is well-suited to an experienced, proactive and detail-oriented infrastructure professional who thrives in secure environments, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and is committed to operational excellence.
This is a permanent full-time opportunity and can be based in Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Perth.
NV1 security clearance is essential, with the ability to upgrade to NV2.
Service Operations
Provide day‑to‑day support and sustainment of compute platforms including Nutanix, VMware and Hyper‑V.
Monitor and maintain the performance, health and availability of compute clusters and host infrastructure.
Undertake proactive capacity management and platform tuning.
Administer backup platforms (HYCU, DPM), ensuring job success and regular recovery testing.
Support operations across multiple secure government environments.
Participate in occasional on-call duties to support Defence exercises and operations.
Work on-site with clients, collaborating with ADF, APS and contractor personnel.
Incident & Change Management
Respond to incidents, service requests and environment-specific issues.
Assist in troubleshooting and recovery efforts.
Plan, test and implement changes under established change management processes.
Contribute to post-incident reviews and corrective action planning.
Platform & Infrastructure Management
Support lifecycle management activities such as hypervisor patching, firmware updates and version upgrades.
Ensure compliance with configuration baselines, security hardening standards and operational guidelines.
Maintain VM templates and drive automation of provisioning tasks.
Collaborate with storage and network teams to ensure cross‑platform integration and performance.
Backup & Recovery Operations
Maintain backup and recovery systems to meet data protection and compliance requirements.
Monitor backup performance and proactively address failures or capacity issues.
Support restoration tasks, DR testing and system recovery activities.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate documentation of configurations, procedures and platform changes.
Ensure systems meet stringent security and compliance obligations.
Participate in audits, reporting and governance processes as required.
About You
You will bring a strong background in infrastructure operations and secure virtualised environments, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
Essential Requirements
3+ years in virtualisation, infrastructure or systems administration roles.
Practical experience with at least two of: VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Microsoft Hyper‑V.
Experience with backup tools (HYCU, DPM).
Demonstrated capability in maintaining secure, high‑availability virtual environments.
Familiarity with patching, system hardening and platform upgrades.
Active NV1 security clearance (or higher).
ITIL V3/4 Foundation certification.
Desirable
Certifications: VMware (VCP), Nutanix (NCP/MCP), Microsoft Hyper-V.
Experience with Prism, vCenter or SCVMM.
Knowledge of DR principles, deduplication and retention strategies.
Exposure to monitoring tools (SolarWinds, vROps, Prism Central).
Experience working in secure or classified environments.
Soft Skills
