Position Summary: Reporting to the company’s Vice President – General Counsel, this role offers the opportunity to work in an in-house legal position supporting the business’s daily operations and long-term goals. The successful candidate will handle pre-litigation dispute resolution, litigation, commercial contracts, and other duties as assigned. They will work closely with colleagues in the legal department, internal stakeholders in other departments, and outside legal counsel.
This position is ideal for candidates with experience advising businesses that interact directly with consumers, particularly in industries subject to consumer protection regulations and standards governing business practices. As a member of a small, dynamic legal department, the Legal Counsel I will serve as a legal generalist, assuming a broad range of responsibilities and adapting to evolving business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Litigation Dispute Resolution
- Work with internal customer service, operations, and field leadership teams to resolve consumer disputes before they escalate into litigation.
- Respond to consumer complaints made through various channels, including State Attorneys General and State Departments of Consumer Protection, and advise the operations team on responding to disputes made through other forums such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
- Advise and assist with remediation strategies to avoid reputational harm and legal escalation.
- Provide legal guidance on business practices, marketing, and customer interactions to ensure compliance with applicable laws and industry standards.
Litigation
- Critically evaluate legal strategy, filings, and discovery practices by outside counsel.
- Assess liability exposure, alleged damages, and settlement demands.
- Ensure alignment of legal strategies with the company’s business objectives and risk tolerance.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
- Advise on compliance with federal, state, and local laws affecting consumer-facing operations, including contracts, advertising, sales practices, and customer communications.
- Monitor developments in consumer protection law and regulations and communicate relevant updates to business stakeholders.
- Support the development and implementation of policies and training programs to promote ethical business conduct and compliance.
Commercial Contracts & Generalist Responsibilities
- Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of routine commercial agreements, including real estate leases, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), vendor contracts, and other standard business documents that support day-to-day operations.
- Provide clear, practical legal advice to internal stakeholders regarding contract terms, risk allocation, and compliance with company policies and applicable laws.
- Collaborate with business leaders and cross-functional teams to address contract-related issues and facilitate timely execution of agreements.
- Assume a broad range of responsibilities and adapt to evolving business needs, including supporting new initiatives, special projects, and other legal matters as they arise.
Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Licensed and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- At least three years of relevant legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department, with a preference for experience in consumer-facing industries (e.g., retail, home services, financial services, insurance, or other B2C sectors)
- Demonstrated ability to advise on matters involving consumer protection, regulatory compliance, and business practices
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Practical, business-minded approach to legal risk-assessment and problem-solving
Work Schedule:
- Tuesday – Thursday: In-office in Richardson, TX headquarters
- Monday & Friday: In-office or remote/flexible
