Lead Structural Analysis Engineer
Brackley, UK
The Mercedes Formula One Team is seeking a passionate, driven, and technically exceptional Lead
Structural Analysis Engineer to join our Composites & Mechanical Stress group. In this role, you will
be at the forefront of developing the most advanced, lightweight, and pioneering structures on the
Formula One grid.
Reporting to the Head of Composite and Mechanical Stress you will lead structural analysis activities
across critical car components, champion innovation in both process and product, and push the
boundaries of what is technically possible. Curiosity, determination, and a hunger to challenge
convention are essential.
Lead structural analysis projects across composite and metallic components, ensuring optimal balance of performance, strength, stiffness, and reliability, whilst maintaining ownership throughout the product lifecycle.
Develop and refine advanced simulation methodologies to support rapid, high-fidelity decision-making in a fast-paced environment.
Drive innovation in materials, structural concepts, and analysis approaches to unlock competitive advantage.
Collaborate closely with design, aerodynamics, vehicle performance, and production groups to deliver integrated, high-performance solutions.
Provide technical leadership on complex structures, guiding engineers in best-practice modelling, validation, and documentation.
Review load cases, failure modes, and performance envelopes, providing clear recommendations backed by sound engineering judgement.
Support physical testing programmes, correlation exercises, and continuous improvement through analysis to test alignment.
Champion new ideas, novel approaches, and continuous refinement of tools, workflows, and simulation capabilities.
Ensure that all work meets stringent performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
You bring a rare blend of technical mastery, curiosity, and competitive spirit. You thrive on solving
complex structural problems and enjoy pushing technology to its limits. You relish working under time
pressure and remain meticulous even when the challenge intensifies.
An engineering degree (2:1 minimum grade)
Proven experience in structural analysis within motorsport, aerospace, or a similarly demanding high-performance engineering environment.
Expert-level proficiency in FEA tools (e.g. Abaqus, Hyperworks, FE-Safe or similar), including non-linear analysis and composite modelling.
Strong understanding of composite and metallic materials, structural behaviour, failure mechanisms, linear and non-linear material models, and optimisation approaches.
Ability to think beyond standard solutions and explore novel structural concepts.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects and mentor engineers.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate across functions.
A proactive, inquisitive mindset with a drive to innovate and improve.
Experience in high-rate iterative development cycles typical of Formula One.
Familiarity with composite and metallic structures optimisation and tools (e.g. Tosca, Optiassist) scripting/automation, or advanced material modelling.
Familiarity with racecar kinematics and dynamics.
Demonstrated contributions to process development or simulation toolchain improvements.
Influence the design of championship-contending car structures.
Work in a culture that values creativity, innovation, and engineering excellence, all with the support you need to thrive in our no-blame environment.
Collaborate with industry-leading experts across design, aerodynamics, vehicle performance, and materials engineering.
Be part of a team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of structural performance in Formula One - be a performance pioneer.
