We are looking for a Lead Java Software Engineer to join a project team to deliver a leading surveillance product. The role is based in Sydney with the Nasdaq Market Surveillance team.
This is a permanent full-time role based in Sydney, Australia following a hybrid work model setup (at least 2 in office days per week).

Lead the design, development, troubleshooting, and implementation of Java‑based solutions for Nasdaq Market Surveillance platforms
Act as a technical leader within the team, driving architectural decisions and ensuring high‑quality, scalable, and maintainable solutions
Review and translate business requirements and system requirements into technical designs and implementations
Participate in and lead technical design discussions, functional specification reviews, code reviews, and estimation activities
Proactively identify risks, performance bottlenecks, and technical debt, and drive resolution through well‑defined technical solutions
Author and review technical specifications, design documents, and implementation plans
Provide hands‑on development support for complex and high‑impact initiatives
Mentor and coach engineers, promoting best practices, improving team efficiency, and encouraging adoption of modern engineering approaches
Contribute to broader IT and systems strategy, including platform evolution, integrations, and client‑facing solutions where applicable
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong hands‑on expertise in Java
Proven experience operating in a lead or senior technical role, influencing design and guiding other engineers
Solid understanding of enterprise‑scale systems, distributed architectures, and performance‑critical applications
Experience working in financial services or capital markets is highly preferred, but not required
Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB) is a plus
Strong problem‑solving skills, business acumen, and ability to work effectively with cross‑functional stakeholders
Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, technical excellence, and professional development
