Job Summary: You will serve as a LEAD FIREFIGHTER (BASIC LIFE SUPPORT/ HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECHNICIAN) LS/HAZMAT TECHNICIAN) in the Fire and Emergency Services, Fire Protection of NAVBASE KITSAP SILVERDALE WA.

Major Duties:

  • You will collaborate with fire fighter personnel to ensure emergency responses (e.g., fire suppression, injured victims, hazardous spill cleanup) are assigned.
  • You will coordinate placement of firefighting equipment or other resources during emergencies.
  • You will coordinate with officers on other shifts and stations to ensure work accomplishment, training, and priorities are met.
  • You will identify hazards that require modification to a fire prevention or fire protection program.
  • You will identify, collect, and interpret hazards of known and unknown hazardous materials involved.
  • You will use medical equipment (e.g., semi-automatic defibrillation device, cervical spine collars, back boards, hydraulic rescue tools) in providing emergency services.

Qualifications: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Preparing reports concerning fire runs, training, maintenance, and inspections to keep supervisor informed; 2) Leading structural firefighting duties for facilities that include research and/or large industrial complexes; 3)Performing pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with layout, fire hazards and location of fixed fire protection systems to maintain up to date knowledge for fighting structural fires; 4) Leading crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic and/or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high; 5) Driving/operating firefighting vehicles to include pumpers, aerial ladder truck considering factors such as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, location of armament on aircraft to maintain safety of operations; 6) Surveying hazardous material incidents to identify materials involved, determine whether hazardous materials have been released and surrounds conditions to predict likely behavior of hazardous materials; and 7) Administering emergency medical care and preparing victims for transport to medical facilities. Additional Information (Continued): The employee is required to work a 72 hour week on a 48-hour on, 72hour off basis, which includes weekends and holidays. Subject to mandatory overtime and recall. This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and fall under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and II Fire Officer I Fire Instructor I Fire Inspector I Hazardous Materials Incident Commander National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) These certifications must have been awarded by National Registry, DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications, you will be rated ineligible. Physical Demands: Ability to lift and move heavy objects, such as charges hoses, fire extinguishers, equipment and incapacitated persons. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50-60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. Work Environment: Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or possible explosions. May suffer from burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat; smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMAT and high noise levels.
