Lead Data Scientist

Current Need:

The Lead Data Scientist (DS) will drive the analytics strategy for “AI for O&M Finance” program as well as build AI solutions hands-on that enhance decision intelligence, operational efficiency, and risk management across Oncology & Multispecialty (O&M) Finance. This role blends senior-level DS ownership across multiple projects and hands-on technical capability — operating at the intersection of Advanced Analytics & Data Science, Engineering and Product. It is a fantastic opportunity for an accomplished data scientist to expand their impact beyond just their individual workstream. The role demands deep technical acumen in data science and AI/ML and strong critical thinking skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Analytics and AI Strategy and Architecture

  • Define and own the approach for O&M Finance use cases, e.g., Fraud & Risk Management, Financial Controller / Agentic AI, Forecasting, Collections Improvement Analytics
  • Decide when to use data-driven rules vs advanced analytics vs AI/ML (or hybrid) approach, based on value, feasibility, relevance
  • Partner with the TPM to define scope, success metrics, and solution iteration plans
  • Champions adoption of new AI/ML technology and methods, driving continuous improvement across projects

Technical Work and Collaboration

  • Lead development of time series forecasting models (short-term, long-term, sparse data), anomaly detection models (transactions, journals, contracts, pricing), scenario modeling for finance decisions, document entity extraction, and agentic workflows
  • Work closely with Data and ML Engineering teams to ensure feasibility, scalability, and alignment with architectural standards
  • Work with minimal ML engineering support to harden models for production, and define monitoring, drift detection, and retraining strategies
  • Collaborate with the project leadership and Lead Technical Product Manager to inform the roadmap for AI‑enabled finance capabilities from a technical standpoint
  • Assist with preparation for AI Review Board and Enterprise Architecture Review Board
  • Ensure explainability and auditability for finance and SOX contexts where necessary
  • Mentor Sr. Data Scientists and other junior staff on the project

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Translate business risk (e.g., concessions, mis‑billing) into actionable technical AI/ML design
  • Builds strong, trust-based relationships with stakeholders, including business units, data engineering, and executive leadership through high quality work
  • Define technical aspects of UAT and resolve issues in a well-organized manner. 

Communication and Documentation

  • Communicate progress, risks, and dependencies to product manager and seek leadership support where necessary
  • Create and maintain product documentation, including technical specs, release notes, and user guides

Minimum Requirement:

Degree or equivalent and typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience

  

Critical Skills

  • 10+ years of professional experience in progressively advancing data science and applied AI/ML roles
  • Strong background in forecasting, classification, anomaly detection / risk modeling, statistical modeling
  • Experience working with financial data (AR/AP, GL, contracts)
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Agent workflows and/or LLM-augmented analytics
  • Clearly demonstrated experience working with Python, SQL
  • Solid understanding of modern digital architectures, APIs, cloud platforms, data ecosystems, and software development practices
  • Hands-on experience in health care industry (especially oncology) and/or regulated environment is a plus
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills

Additional Skills:

  • Experience supporting SOX, audit, or financial controls
  • Prior work in healthcare, life sciences, or complex B2B finance

Working Conditions:

  • In office requirement, we are Flex and Connect with 2 days a week in office

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$113,500 - $189,100
