The Legal Department of Markel Insurance SE is a lean, highly engaged international in-house team supporting all corporate, regulatory, product-related and strategic initiatives of the company across Europe. With continued growth, international expansion and increasing regulatory complexity, we are strengthening our legal function with this opportunity for a motivated and ambitious

Junior Legal Counsel (m/f/d).

You will work closely with the Managing Counsel and the international legal teams in London and Europe, actively contributing to the legal infrastructure, internal governance and business development of Markel Insurance SE.
 

What you’ll be doing:

Corporate & Regulatory (Insurance)

  • Supporting the Managing Counsel in all legal matters across EU jurisdictions.
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of contracts (insurance cooperation agreements, service provider agreements, NDAs, brokerage and delegated authority agreements, corporate documents, etc.).
  • Legal research and preparation of memoranda on insurance regulatory law (VAG, IDD, MaGo, Solvency II, DORA, BaFin-Guidance).
  • Assisting with BaFin filings, corporate secretarial governance, board-level documentation and reporting.
  • Preparing board minutes, circular resolutions and supporting management governance processes.

Commercial & Product-Related

  • Supporting the development, review and maintenance of product documentation and templates.
  • Analysing German and EU insurance regulations affecting product wording and operational processes.
  • Collaborating closely with underwriting, compliance, operations and finance teams on legal questions.

Operational Legal Support

  • Drafting and updating internal guidelines, templates, playbooks, process descriptions and checklists.
  • Supporting internal projects such as digitalisation, governance enhancements, policy updates and quality management.
  • Participating in cross-functional project teams across Germany, Netherlands, Spain, France and the UK.

Independent Work & Initiative

  • Taking ownership for own workstreams and time management.
  • Proactively identifying risks, proposing solutions and driving topics to completion
  • Providing well-structured, concise and high-quality legal analyses and recommendations

Our must-haves:

  • Successfully completed 1st State Law Exam in Germany
  • Very good command of written and spoken German and English
  • First experience in insurance, corporate, commercial or regulatory law (e.g., internships, legal traineeship, part-time jobs, law firm, in-house, MGA, InsurTech).
  • Problem solver skilled at recognizing and delivering pragmatic solutions
  • Strong analytical skills and precise working style
  • Ability to work in a growing, international, and performance-based environment.
  • Strong organisational skills, ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Motivation to grow into a full Legal Counsel role within an international insurance group
