Job Description:

Summary:

Reporters/Researchers work in person in the IRW newsroom for 8 - 10 weeks in the summer months, starting on or around June 1st. Applications are open to undergraduate and graduate students from universities across the country for those seeking to sharpen their investigative reporting skills.

Duties include research, fact-checking, filing public-records requests, analyzing data, interviewing subjects and experts, and other tasks as they arise. At the direction of IRW editors and our journalism publishing partners, interns may work on stories across a wide range of topics, including police use of force to political funding to the release of toxic chemicals in water and air. These stories often focus on the accountability of government agencies. 

American University and the Investigative Reporting Workshop does not provide housing or transportation.

Essential Functions:

1.) Support IRW’s Investigations

  • Research, fact-checking, filing public record requests, interviewing subjects and experts.

2.) Request and Analyze Data

  • Request and gather public information; analyze data.

3.) Other Duties as Assigned

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • About 20 to 27 hours per week.

  • Temporary position.

  • Continuation of the program/position is contingent upon external funding.

Salary Range:

  • $22.50 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Less than 1 year of relevant experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma.

  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience
