We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Tax Intern to join Zayo’s Tax team. This intern will gain hands-on experience in income tax, property tax, and indirect tax compliance and analysis. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, comfortable working with data, and ready to support a wide range of tax functions across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Income Tax
Assist with the preparation of federal and state income tax workpapers.
Support the quarterly income tax provision calculations by gathering data and preparing calculations.
Maintain tax depreciation records and other fixed asset schedules.
Participate in tax research projects and summarize findings for the team.
Support responses to federal and state tax notices or audits.
Property Tax
Participate in review and validation of Property Tax bills and assist staff with import into tax bill management and payment systems.
Other Property Tax related projects as assigned
Indirect Tax (Sales, Use, Telecom Fees & Surcharges)
Assist with the preparation and filing of sales & use tax and telecom regulatory returns (e.g., USF, E-911, PUC fees).
Perform reconciliations of tax accounts and review exemption certificates.
Support responses to inquiries and audits from tax authorities.
Maintain tax matrices, rate tables, and documentation for invoiced charges.
General Responsibilities
Perform data analysis using Excel, ERP systems, and tax software (e.g., OneSource, Vertex, Avalara).
Contribute to process documentation and improvement initiatives across all tax verticals.
Organize and maintain electronic workpapers and tax records.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Accounting, Finance, and Regulatory.
Qualifications
Required
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field.
Strong analytical and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and willingness to learn new tax systems.
Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Preferred
Coursework in tax or previous internship experience.
Interest in telecommunications, technology, or regulated industries.
Familiarity with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle) or tax compliance software.
Experience with data automation programs (Alteryx, Power Query)

The base pay range shown is a guideline and reasonable estimate for this role. It takes into account the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions. Actual compensation offered may vary from the posted range based upon geographic location, work experience, skill level, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
Additionally, this position may be eligible for certain benefits, such as health insurance and 401(k).
