Job Summary: About the Position: This position falls under the Defense Health Agency-Atlantic Network at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth within the Healthcare Simulation and Bioskills Training Center, supporting and enhancing professional education research programs utilizing cadaveric specimens and healthcare simulators. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Highly qualified candidates may qualify for Recruitment Incentive, Relocation Incentive, Enhanced Leave Accrual or Advanced In-Hire Incentives.

Major Duties:

  • Responsible for all aspects of human anatomic specimen care to include accountability through monthly inventory and detailed specimen tracking processes.
  • Ensure the proper acquisition, preparation, storage, accountability, and disposition of cadaveric specimens according to internal and external policies.
  • Serve as the lead custodian for anatomic specimens entrusted to the local medical treatment facility through anatomic use and/or procurement programs.
  • Ensure strict adherence specific cadaveric specimen handling and accountability requirements of Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Anatomic Service, and other specimen procurement sources.
  • Manage dedicated complex surgical and diagnostic equipment, standard surgical and procedural instruments.
  • Manage specimen preservation units, hazardous material storage and disposal equipment, surgical training workstations, and ancillary operating room support equipment.
  • Manage and prepare documentation for maintenance, repair, calibration, and certification of equipment.
  • Ensure proper disposal of biological waste and chemicals in compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Safety Data Sheets (SOS), and other hospital-wide life safety directives.
  • Serve as gross anatomical specimen subject matter expert in supporting the education and training efforts of professional education programs.
  • Develop and maintain scheduling and data collection systems to track user types, training types and other user and program-based metrics.
  • Facilitate and support training courses by preparing facilities, set-up of appropriate surgical support equipment, set-up of surgical instruments, documentation and other support materials and administrative support to document training efforts.
  • Perform periodic reviews of the literature relevant to micro- and microvascular surgical training, gross anatomical training and stays current on development in the surgical training field.
  • Participate in the creation of cadaveric and non-cadaveric simulation training courses.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes, 1) Experience using knowledge of surgical instrument utilization or procedures and anatomic specimen lab maintenance; 2) Experience assisting in cadaver storage and handling; AND 3) Assisting in Anatomic preparation, accountability, disposal, tracking and cataloguing of specimens and cadavers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR EDUCATION: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Mortuary Science, Nursing or Health Professions Education and Technology, Pathology, Forensic Science, Autopsy Technician. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
