The Head Trader, Gas (Henry Hub and AECO) is a senior trading leadership role accountable for managing Capital Power’s AECO and Henry Hub gas exposures from next day through 5 +years forward. This role sits at the intersection of strategy, execution, analytics, and people leadership, with a mandate to generate strong, repeatable, risk‑adjusted returns.
 

In this role, you will translate market fundamentals, quantitative insights, and real‑time constraints into disciplined trading and portfolio management strategies. You will lead and develop a trading team while strengthening trader capability.
 

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead a gas team of traders and analysts towards a unified goal of portfolio profitability while respecting risk management limits
  • Own end‑to‑end positioning for Capital Power’s large AECO portfolio position delivering durable, risk‑adjusted returns across market regimes
  • Generate and execute speculative‑driven trading strategies with clear catalysts, downside definitions, and invalidation criteria across short, medium, and long‑term horizons
  • Warehouse and manage the execution of Capital Power’s Henry Hub positions and needs across portfolio regions (Canada and the US)
  • Drive the development of Canadian, L48 and global gas fundamentals analytics and insights
  • Translate fundamentals, quantitative analytics, and real‑time constraints into conviction‑weighted sizing decisions and capital allocation
  • Lead structured morning calls and trade playbooks, setting direction, prioritizing risk, and driving disciplined execution
  • Enforce first‑class risk and execution standards, including limit governance, documentation of trade rationale, and Trade Cost Analysis (TCA)
  • Own curve integrity and assumptions; challenge models, partner with analytics on scenario design and stress testing, and continuously refine signal quality.
  • Integrate gas, power, congestion, and optionality to optimize cross‑commodity outcomes, including long‑dated hedging and structured exposure

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, economics, or finance
  • Preference towards graduated degrees, CFA, FRM or other financial designation holders


Experience:

  • 8+ years of trading experience in natural gas, power, or related commodities, with a demonstrated live P&L track record and stable drawdown profile
  • Deep understanding of physical gas fundamentals across Canadian and US gas regions with special preference towards, AECO, HH, Mid-west and East basis points.
  • Experience with swaps (outright, x-time and x-location spreads), options, storage, pipeline assets.
  • Strong fluency and experience with management and manipulation of large datasets via Python, SQL, R is a strong asset


Working Conditions

  • This is a Calgary in office- based role.
  • Relocation support will be provided if required.
  • Periods of increased office presence, extended hours, or weekend coverage may be required depending on market and portfolio conditions.
