RTX Corporation is an Aerospace and Defense company that provides advanced systems and services for commercial, military and government customers worldwide. It comprises three industry-leading businesses – Collins Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon. Its 185,000 employees enable the company to operate at the edge of known science as they imagine and deliver solutions that push the boundaries in quantum physics, electric propulsion, directed energy, hypersonics, avionics and cybersecurity. The company, formed in 2020 through the combination of Raytheon Company and the United Technologies Corporation aerospace businesses, is headquartered in Arlington, VA.

RTX BBN Technologies is one of RTX’s premier research and development centers. Our diverse research portfolio combines the best technologies to deliver innovative, custom solutions for real-world applications.

At RTX BBN Technologies, we develop new science by applying radical cross-disciplinary techniques to prototype systems in order to prove concept viability. This is especially evident in our Physical Systems and Sciences group, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where scientists and engineers anticipate the future in both very large and very small-scale scientific systems that often need to survive challenging operational environments.

What You Will Learn

We are seeking a qualified early career professional to become an integral part of these efforts by joining the hardware development team, designing and prototyping innovative multi-domain system architectures.

You will lead small teams developing custom electromechanical systems, working side by side with systems engineers, software developers, and scientists. Advanced prototype hardware will be developed and manufactured on site as well as by contract manufacturers and your designs will integrate with custom electronics and software on challenging R&D programs. This position requires working knowledge and hands-on capabilities with physical hardware and experimental equipment to collect and analyze data sets, which includes occasional off-site field testing. Examples of the kinds of challenging advanced systems this team has developed innovative solutions for:

End to end design of custom RF and underwater communication payload packages for unmanned undersea vehicles

Development of high channel density and high-fidelity ruggedized data acquisition systems for integration into land, sea, and airborne miliary platforms

Unique packaging, power, and thermal management designs for ultra-low power, long-lifetime covert sensor systems

Design and development of distributed real-time processing systems interfaced with seismic, acoustic, or RF sensor systems

The candidate will also support new business development by participating in proposal writing and making presentations to prospective customers. These projects may be sponsored by the Department of Defense, other Federal Government agencies or commercial organizations

Qualifications You Must Have *

  • A Bachelor's degree in an applicable discipline (i.e., Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field) and 5 years of relevant professional work experience; or a Master’s degree in an applicable discipline and 3 years of relevant professional work experience; or a new PhD graduate

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and prototyping of electromechanical systems, from proof of concept through fieldable rugged prototype hardware

  • Professional experience with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks) including large assembly models, build to print prototype design, FEA, and GD&T

  • Proficiency in defining electrical wiring and cabling/cable drawings for power, serial, RF (coaxial), and fiber optic interfaces

  • Professional experience working with circuits and electrical components design and testing; knowledge of how to solder surface mount components and use electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and analyzers

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, direct, and coordinate tasks or small projects involving multiple individual contributors

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Professional experience modeling physical systems (MATLAB), analytically or numerically, and developing test applications to collect data to validate model accuracy

  • Expertise in manufacturing and prototyping processes

  • Hand-on experience with manual and CNC machining equipment, supporting tools such as bandsaws, table saw, drill press, grinders, pneumatic tools, routers, QC table and measuring tools

  • Experience in 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving is a plus

  • Experience in composites and low volume molding methods

What We Offer

Whether you’re just starting out on your career journey or are an experienced professional, we offer a robust total rewards package with compensation; healthcare, wellness, retirement, and work/life benefits; career development and recognition programs.
