Role Overview
The Sr Manager, Scientific Project Management will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing Flagship Pioneering’s partnership and ecosystem strategy across the UK.
This role blends scientific fluency, strategic insight, external relationship management, and program leadership, supporting existing collaborations while helping identify, assess, and develop new partnership and venture-creation opportunities as Flagship expands its UK presence.
You will work across academic, clinical, governmental, and technology-innovation stakeholders — including Cambridge, the Crick, NIHR/BRCs, ARIA, and emerging partners — to accelerate collaboration, guide opportunity evaluation, and connect the UK’s world-leading capabilities with Flagship’s bioplatform innovation engine.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific, Strategic & Competitive Insight
- Continuously evaluate emerging UK scientific, translational, and technology domains — identifying trends, new capabilities, and breakthrough research aligned with Flagship’s exploration and bioplatform priorities.
- Conduct horizon scanning and competitive/landscape assessments that inform Flagship’s UK portfolio strategy and highlight areas for new partnership or venture-creation opportunities.
- Translate complex scientific concepts and early-stage discoveries into actionable insights and strategic recommendations for internal decision-making.
Opportunity Assessment & Due Diligence
- Lead early diligence for potential new partnerships, initiatives, or co-creation opportunities, integrating scientific, strategic, and ecosystem considerations.
- Support internal diligence & debate processes by preparing evidence-based assessments, opportunity briefs, and structured recommendations.
- Work cross-functionally with scientific, BD, and venture-creation teams to assess feasibility, impact potential, and strategic fit.
Partnership Development & Ecosystem Expansion
- Support the design, launch, and delivery of multi-institutional collaborations — spanning academia (e.g., Cambridge, Crick), clinical research networks (NIHR/BRCs), government innovation bodies (e.g., ARIA), and technology partners.
- Build and nurture relationships with institutional leaders, principal investigators, translational units, research offices, and innovation partners across the UK.
- Identify new partnership pathways and develop strategic proposals for Flagship leadership.
Program, Project & Relationship Management
- Oversee project planning, execution, budgeting, and reporting for partnership and ecosystem initiatives.
- Prepare dashboards, KPIs, and progress updates for internal leadership, joint steering committees, and external partners.
- Coordinate operational, contractual, and governance workflows with universities, research offices, and clinical networks.
Workshops, Events & Convening
- Support the preparation, facilitation, and follow-up of scientific workshops, symposia, and innovation forums — including those with NIHR/BRCs, ARIA, Cambridge, the Crick, and future partners.
- Help design high-impact sessions that spark collaboration between Flagship companies and UK researchers, technologists, and clinicians.
Communication, Visualisation & Executive Presentations
- Develop polished, executive-ready presentations, case studies, landscape summaries, and partnership materials.
- Partner with communications teams to highlight partnership successes, research insights, and Flagship’s impact in the UK.
- Represent Flagship Pioneering UK at ecosystem events, meetings, and strategic engagements.
Team Collaboration & Organisational Connectivity
- Collaborate with the broader Flagship Pioneering UK and global teams, helping ensure strategic alignment and strong connectivity across Flagship’s venture-creation and exploratory programs.
- Contribute to internal processes, knowledge-sharing, and UK strategy development as the team grows and responsibilities evolve.
Qualifications
Required
- Masters, PhD or equivalent advanced degree in biomedical or life sciences.
- Min 2 years in management consulting or venture capital investing experience.
- Experience managing scientific, translational, or innovation-focused collaborations across academia, industry, or government.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to engage scientific, technical, and executive audiences.
- Demonstrated project and program management capability; thrives in dynamic, entrepreneurial environments.
- Ability to create clear, compelling presentations and narratives from complex scientific and strategic information.
Desirable
- Familiarity with the UK life-sciences ecosystem (e.g., Cambridge, Crick, Babraham, Sanger, NIHR/BRCs, ARIA).
- Familiarity with the Flagship Pioneering ecosystem
- Experience in venture creation, scientific due diligence, competitive intelligence, or innovation management.
- Strong skills in PowerPoint, Excel, or dashboarding/visualisation tools; comfort producing high-quality, executive-level materials.

The salary range for this role is $1 - $1. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience.
