Job Summary

Espaces francophones (EF) was born from the initiative of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) and the Okanagan School of Education (OSE); it was originally funded by a BC Ministry of Education and Child Care project-grant aiming to foster a sense of belonging to the Francophone community for bilingual – and often multilingual – French speakers on the UBCO campus (staff, faculty, students). This lead to formalized collaborations with BC Interior school districts and the Centre culturel francophone de l’Okanagan (CCFO). Through its programming and consultation with stakeholders since 2022, EF was able to conduct a needs assessment that showed gaps in the discoverability of services in French and a worrisome level of distress in students from the (French) B.Ed. program who were experiencing various levels of dissatisfaction regarding the sense of belonging and their linguistic security. These feelings are well documented by researchers on minority-language. With that in mind, Espaces francophones’ directors applied for a 2-year grant aiming to develop structuring, sustainable activities, training, and community-building strategies to enhance the health, wellness, and diversity of Francophones on UBCO campus. This position is made possible with the support of the Government of Canada and the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care.

The Espaces Francophones Education Strategist develops and implements organizational change strategies, initiatives, and programs that promotes the overall vision, strategy, and goals for equity, diversity and inclusion at UBC. Through design, delivery and facilitation of workshops, trainings, assessments, dialogues, and interventions with and for Francophone students, staff and faculty, the Education Strategist enhances the discoverability of local and distant resources and services (e.g. employment, immigration, education, healthcare, childcare, housing, etc.) relative to the health, wellbeing, and diversity. They coordinate and facilitate the interconnection of various organizations (clubs, associations), institutions (schools, government agencies), cultural venues and festivals (theatre, parks) throughout B.C.’s Interior. As such, they contribute to shaping UBC Okanagan campus’ connection with its community.

The Espaces francophones Education Strategist reports to the grant holder of the project “Community, Health, Wellness and Diversity of Francophones on UBCO campus”, who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages and World Literatures, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies; they provide leadership on issues of access to resources in French for all members of the campus community.
