About the role

As an Engineering Manager on the Moniepoint Payments team, you should have strong technical depth and proven leadership experience to guide a high-performing team. The ideal candidate has led complex, high-scale payment systems, driven cross-functional initiatives, mentored engineers at multiple levels, and delivered mission-critical systems under high-critical operational environments.

You should be a hands-on technical leader who enjoys designing scalable systems, coaching engineers, navigating ambiguity, and collaborating with product, business, and compliance teams to build resilient financial infrastructure.

What you’ll get to do

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a world-class engineering team building scalable payment products and platforms.
  • Provide architectural guidance on backend and distributed systems powering high-throughput payments.
  • Drive initiatives that identify bottlenecks and implement engineering solutions that scale reliably and securely.
  • Own complex projects end-to-end, from ideation to launch with a focus on outcomes and measurable impact.
  • Manage delivery schedules, technical roadmaps, and project timelines with clarity and discipline.
  • Guide the team through ambiguity, operational challenges, and mission-critical situations.
  • Partner closely with product, design, data, compliance, and operations to ship high-impact features.
  • Align engineering decisions with business priorities and user needs.
  • Communicate technical challenges, trade-offs, and priorities to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Mentor engineers into senior roles and emerging team leads through structured development practices.
  • Handle interpersonal, technical, and cross-functional conflicts with maturity and transparency.
  • Support the team during periods of ambiguity or high-critical operational pressure.
  • Work effectively with teams distributed across time zones.

To succeed in this role, you should have

  • 10+ years of software development experience with deep exposure to large-scale, distributed systems (e.g., millions of financial transactions per day).
  • Strong technical depth in backend architecture, distributed systems, data consistency, reliability, and scalability.
  • Proven experience owning or designing systems responsible for financial flows, real-time data, or mission-critical transactions.
  • Ability to navigate trade-offs and guide teams through complex technical decisions.
  • 2-3+ years as an Engineering Manager or Technical Lead with people-management responsibilities.
  • Experience growing and mentoring engineering teams, especially in fintech or payments.
  • Comfortable leading teams across time zones and managing distributed execution.
  • Track record of delivering significant features or platforms in close collaboration with product, business, and design.
  • Ability to articulate technical considerations in business terms and align teams toward shared outcomes.
  • Skilled at balancing technical debt, delivery pressure, and long-term platform health.
  • Exceptional communicator able to simplify complexity and provide clarity in decision-making.
  • Experience resolving conflicts, technical disagreements, interpersonal issues, stakeholder misalignment with fairness.
  • Ability to maintain team morale and alignment during stressful or fast-changing situations.
  • BSc in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • Feedback: Conduct regular performance reviews, providing constructive feedback and fostering a growth-oriented environment.
  • Stakeholder Management: Lead project status reviews, manage expectations, and ensure smooth communication between teams and leadership.
