Position Specific Summary
The Electronics Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility performs routine and complex signal-related work for the maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of traffic signals, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and other electronic equipment.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Electronics Technician Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Working Conditions: Once trained will be added to mandatory on-call rotation to work after hours shifts and weekends for emergency services.
Duties and Responsibilities
Designs, constructs, installs, and maintains electronic equipment (Traffic signal cabinets) and communication systems associated with the operations of traffic signals. Fabricates and assembles electronic components within the traffic signal cabinets. Wires equipment and performs tasks such as system modification, equipment calibration, and repair. Drives and utilizes a 50ft aerial lift truck in order to reach the traffic signal components. Performs preventative maintenance on intersections by testing and verifying that equipment is operating efficiently and effectively.
Programs, tests, and align traffic signal equipment. Sets up and calibrates traffic signal electronic systems using schematics and diagrams. Aligns and calibrates cables and wiring. Modifies signal cabinets with Uninterrupted Power Service (UPS) systems, tests for field deployment, calibrates and tests monitor systems and other components an upgrades firmware on hardware when necessary. Transports completed traffic signal cabinets
Troubleshoots electronic equipment and communication systems identifies and repairs malfunctions and replaces faulty materials. Modifies intersections for flashing yellow operations, rewires intersections, changes signal cabinets, and upgrades equipment with minimal disruptions to traffic. Corrects minor problems and investigates and resolves major problems.
Conducts traffic studies, maintains records, assists with traffic signal timing plans and project inspections, and investigates and documents citizen inquiries.
Responds to urgent after-hours calls for traffic signal malfunctions. Resorts functionality of intersections with minimal downtime and accurate reporting.
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
