The Director of Compensation will lead the design, implementation, and governance of compensation strategies for enabling functions across Technology, Data, Operations, Claims, and Corporate. This role ensures competitive, equitable, and market-aligned pay practices that support HIG’s talent strategy, business objectives, and compliance requirements. The Director partners closely with HR Business Partners, senior business leaders, and the Compensation team to deliver innovative solutions that attract, retain, and motivate top talent.
This is a hybrid role based in Hartford, CT, Chicago, IL, Columbus, OH, Nashville, TN, or Denver, CO. Remotely based candidates may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute compensation strategies and solutions aligned with functional goals and functional priorities.
Serve as a trusted advisor on aligning talent strategies, workforce planning and organizational change to compensation design and delivery.
Lead job architecture and leveling initiatives consistency and scalability.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
Partner with HRBPs and business leaders to deliver compensation solutions that drive performance and engagement.
Partner and facilitate functional annual compensation cycles (merit, bonus, equity) and ensure alignment with company philosophy and regulatory compliance.
Market Intelligence & Analytics
Use advanced analytics and reporting to provide actionable insights to leadership.
Develop communication and training materials for managers and HR teams on compensation programs and tools.
Leverage technology and emerging tools (Workday, market pricing platforms, AI-enabled analytics) to enhance efficiency and decision-making.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, or related field; CCP or advanced degree preferred.
10+ years of progressive experience in compensation, including leadership of complex programs across multiple functions.
Deep expertise in job architecture, market pricing, and compensation governance.
Strong analytical and financial acumen; ability to interpret complex data and influence decisions.
Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
Proficiency in compensation systems (Workday, Pricing Tools) and advanced Excel.
High integrity and confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
